Description

Description:
Alaska Northstar Federal is looking for a UX Engineer to join the team on a long-term project to be awarded soon. The User Experience (UX) Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and continual improvement of user interfaces and workflows for applications hosted in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with a primary focus on Section 508 accessibility compliance. The successful candidate will ensure that all developed systems fully meet or exceed accessibility requirements, providing equitable access and optimal usability for all users, including those with disabilities. The role demands collaboration with stakeholders, cross-functional technical teams, and end users to advance both user-centric design and accessibility best practices in accordance with federal and DoD standards.

CANDIDATE MUST HAVE AT LEAST 4 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING:

  • UX/UI design or engineering roles, with a focus on enterprise or government web applications.
  • Ensuring Section 508 and WCAG compliance for digital products—portfolio or conformance documentation preferred.
  • Modern UX/UI frameworks and tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch), as well as front-end technologies (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular, or Vue).
  • Assistive technologies (e.g., JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), ARIA attributes, and mobile/desktop accessibility standards.
  • Authoring VPATs, section 508 statements, and user support materials for federal clients.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to educate stakeholders and document complex accessibility processes clearly.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) certification such as CPACC or WAS.
  • Experience supporting application development on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or other major cloud environments.
  • Experinece supporting ATO, RMF, FedRAMP, or similar federal compliance activities as related to user-facing systems.
  • Familiarity with Agile, DevSecOps, or human-centered design methodologies in government environments.
  • Understanding of data visualization accessibility, document remediation, and integration of accessible APIs and third-party resources.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and integration of accessible, user-friendly interfaces for web and application solutions in the OCI environment via Oracle Forms, ensuring all products deliver outstanding usability for diverse user groups.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of Section 508, WCAG 2.1 (or newer), and other relevant accessibility regulations throughout the system development lifecycle—from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, and maintenance.
  • Conduct accessibility assessments using both automated tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE) and manual testing techniques (including screen reader and keyboard-only testing) to validate compliance and advise on remediation strategies.
  • Collaborate with product owners, software engineers, system administrators, and cybersecurity teams to integrate accessible design patterns and resolve accessibility issues throughout agile sprints or project workflows.
  • Interpret complex business requirements and user feedback—especially from users with disabilities—into practical, accessible interface solutions, ensuring alignment with mission objectives and user needs.
  • Prepare Section 508 conformance and VPAT documentation for all user-facing deliverables as required by government and contractor standards; maintain records to satisfy Authority to Operate (ATO), RMF, and audit processes.
  • Develop accessible documentation and end-user resources, ensuring all digital and downloadable materials (PDFs, guides, training) meet or exceed Section 508 accessibility thresholds.
  • Provide guidance and training to internal teams, government stakeholders, and partners on Section 508 regulations, best practices, and compliance strategies.
  • Participate in usability and accessibility testing sessions, coordinate incorporation of user feedback, and drive continuous improvements to user experience and accessibility for all environments.
