Description:

We currently have an opportunity for a 2D Animation Supervisor at our Toronto Studio.
Reporting to: Animation Director

Purpose: Why you’re here at Brown Bag Films

  • To manage, mentor and develop the Animation team to meet creative and schedule goals and bring clarity to the Animation Director, Director and Client expectations.
  • To create an encouraging work environment for Animators to grow and flourish.

Delivery: What you produce

  • Animation Cycles
  • Character poses in the rig
  • Drawovers and Notes on scenes
  • Notes for Rigging
  • Mentorship and Animator development.
  • Limited revision output for show refinement and mentoring purposes

Measurements: How we measure it

  • Animated outputs meeting requirements within scope and Production schedule
  • Client feedback
  • Feedback from Head of Animation, and Production Producer(s) & Director
  • Team development & sustainability.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Things that help you do your job (what is essential and what is desirable)

  • Knowledge:

o Extensive knowledge in 2D animation production pipelines and workflows.
o Strong understanding of character performance.

o Strong appreciation of how animation software applications are applied to animation production.

  • Experience:

o Experience on at least 4-5 long-form Film/TV animation productions.
o Strong leadership experience in managing and mentoring Teams in an animation environment and forecasting project solutions and requirements. (desirable)

o Well-founded experience with asset tracking systems & workflow management software (e.g. Shotgrid).

  • Technical skills:

o Forecasting workflow.
o Knowledge and experience with Toon Boom Harmony.
o Skills in rigging (desirable).
o Proficient in Microsoft Office, in particular Excel, MS Project and PowerPoint.
Lived experience and/or in-depth knowledge of Mexican culture and languages (particularly Spanish) would be considered an asset for this role.
Applicants need to be legally eligible to work in Ontario. The successful candidate will be leading a team of Animators who will be working remotely.

Responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

What you are regularly responsible for doing:

  • Managing and developing the Animation team ensuring the creative and technical process are on target for production output and scheduled delivery. Includes:
  • Working one on one with the Animators to mentor, provide regular feedback, refine and find ways to bring their creative choices into the overall vision of the project
  • Providing clear and concise upfront direction through Notes, drawovers, etc., offering adjustments and clarifications to the team
  • Working with Animators to solve asset, technical or artistic challenges during day-to-day production of the episode
  • Creating an encouraging and engaging work environment within the Animation Team and advocating for the team in respect of animation quality, morale and schedule
  • Being an exemplar to the team by animating an inspiring but small amount of quota.
  • Reviewing and/or Approving

o Animation cycles
o Character poses in the rig
o New rigs

o Tech pass/Leica lock

  • Alongside Animation Director and other Supervisors, collaborating with rigging to continuously sharpen the process and give Animators the best, most efficient tools possible.
  • Alongside the Client, Director and Creative Leads, creating and/or maintaining the animation style for the show that supports overall show intent, and that is engaging for audiences and animators.
  • Tracking progress of weekly episode goals and milestones, identifying and acting on issues (such as vacations, sick days, missing assets, etc.) and collaborating with the Animation Director or Production for larger consideration.
  • Watching a daily every morning to ensure work is going according to Animation Director’s launch, discussions or intention of episode, managing adjustments to anything too far outside show style.
  • Collaborating with the Animation Director to create a Notes vetting system for the team that determines the viability and/or alternative choices that better fit into the production schedule.
