POSITION SUMMARY

CANA Energy is seeking self-motivated, reliable individuals to join our team for upcoming projects in Calgary. CANA’s field personnel are versatile individuals who have opportunities to work in various specializations of the Utilities Industry. We work with Traffic Control Systems, Street Lighting, Natural Gas, Fibre Optics, as well as overhead and underground powerline construction. CANA employees have an opportunity to gain experience within a wide range of Utility Projects.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

To be successful in the role applicants will have:

  • Must be an indentured apprentice registered with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training board, or other provincial equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Vehicle Operator’s License. Class 3 Operator’s License with an Air Endorsement is an asset.
  • Demonstrated safe work skills and commitment including knowledge of safe work and job planning procedures
  • Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of overheard and underground cable installations.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and minimal supervision
  • Experience in rubber glove live work and underground splicing and terminating is an asset.
  • Ability to safely lift heavy objects in excess of 25 kilograms.

Under the guidance and supervision of a Journeyman Power Line Technician (PLT), the Apprentice PLT gains experience in performing activities related to the electrical construction, maintenance, repair and testing on energized and de-energized transmission and distribution lines. Work may be on underground or overhead cable installations.

  • Install, maintain and repair overhead and underground power lines and cables, conductors, lighting arrestors. Switches, transformers street lighting and other associated equipment.
  • Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks, underground splicing and terminate of transformers.
  • PLT’s and Apprentices working on Underground installations will develop and demonstrate knowledge and operational skills on switchgears, cables, testing methods, protective grounding, automation components and working in evacuations, manholes and vaults.
  • PLT’s and Apprentices working on Overhead installations will develop and demonstrate knowledge and operations skills on protective groundings, switching, aerial buckets and hydraulic equipment, climbing poles with belts and spurs and tension stringing devices.
  • All PLT’s and Apprentices must demonstrate understanding and compliance with CANA’s safety policies, industry standard safe work practices and the Alberta Electrical Utility Cod
