Band 7 Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Histopathology
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic band 7 Biomedical Scientist to join our team within this busy laboratory. Applicants must be HCPC registered. The successful candidate will require significant experience in all aspects of histopathology, including immunohistochemistry. Experience in implementing and maintaining quality management as per national accreditation standards is essential. The department is in the process of implementing digital pathology, experience would be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be a forward thinking, practically minded biomedical scientist, who would be responsible for assisting other senior biomedical scientists in the day to day running of the core service within the laboratory and, deputising for the laboratory manager when required .
The Department is based on the Sutton site within the new Centre for Molecular Pathology building, a world class facility.

The post holder will be an experienced HCPC registered biomedical scientist, with extensive knowledge in histopathology.
The post holder will support the laboratory manager and other section leaders in the service provision of a timely, clinically critical laboratory service, providing an expert diagnostic service for haematopathology.
The post holder will be responsible for the day to day technical and operational management of the core service within the department, maintaining high levels of accuracy and reliability, ensuring continuity of service at all times, in conjunction with other section leaders in the department, to achieve the maximum efficiency and quality of the service provided.
The post holder will be expected to take full participation in laboratory accreditation to ensure ongoing compliance with ISO 15189 and liaise with staff in different departments throughout pathology and the Trust.
The post holder will be expected to assist the laboratory management team implementing new techniques and technologies whilst maintaining a full diagnostic service.
The post holder will work closely with the laboratory manager and other section leaders and may be required to deputise for the laboratory manager.

  • Supervise and take responsibility for the day to day planning and co-ordination of the core service. This will include all aspects of the section’s clinical scientific & technical work, staff, equipment and quality system.
  • To ensure knowledge of all instrumentation and equipment is up to date. The post holder must be capable of operating equipment and be the lead trouble shooter for equipment and diagnostic techniques.
  • To ensure the timely and efficient provision of core and technologically complex analytical/diagnostic services within the available resources.
  • To take day to day responsibility for the quality of technical work produced (microscopy for IQA and EQA).
  • To ensure that clinical requests are met according to agreed policies on availability of tests and priorities.
  • To ensure that work is carried out in line with Standing Operational Procedures and/or Departmental policy.
  • To assist in the preparation, review and amendments of SOPs and other documentation.
