Hours: Up to 24 hours/week
Home Campus: Fennell (fully on-site)
Rate of Pay: $29.14 per hour, plus 4% in lieu of vacation

The Accessible Learning Services Computerized Note taker (CN) assists students with disabilities, usually those who are hard of hearing on a short-term basis (usually by semester) by providing computerized note-taking services as required. The student, with the student’s Accessibility Counsellor, will discuss the individual student’s needs, including the preferred method of communication and note-taking needs.
The CN role is to work with students to help them benefit fully from the range of information offered in class, and to better understand course content. To encourage student success, the CN must carry out his/her duties in ways that support the student’s preferred learning and note taking methods.

The following qualifications would be an asset:

  • Previous experience working with a diverse population, such as deaf and hard of hearing clients is an asset.
  • Some familiarity with senior science subjects such as Chemistry

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Support the student’s preferred learning and note taking methods i.e. study notes/verbatim/point form/paragraphs
  • Review course outlines, student timetable, book lists etc.
  • Review handouts, overheads, and PowerPoint presentations prior to class
  • Be present and set up to note take prior to the class starting
  • Transcribe all dialogue within the learning environment using a word processor
  • Have the class notes available to the student within an agreed upon, reasonable time frame
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and class information. Part-time persons should not discuss students with professors, other part-time persons, or anyone other than the student and the Accessibility Counsellor or Accessibility Support Officer without the permission of the student.
  • Respect the assigned student’s individuality
  • In the event of illness or absence, follow the appropriate Protocol for Absence which includes communication with the student and the Accessible Learning Services office.
  • Immediately inform the Accessibility Support Officer when there are service delivery concerns such as timetable changes and/or class cancellation.
  • Computerized Note taking Services are subject to the Provincial College Committee on Disability Issues (CCDI) Guidelines. These Guidelines were initially developed to support the responsibility of the Colleges to provide services to students who are Deaf or have hearing loss. The Guidelines support ASL/LSQ Interpreters, Computerized Note takers, Real-Time Captioners and Deaf-Blind Interveners. Colleges are reimbursed each year for a percentage of the cost of service provision for students who are Deaf or have hearing loss through the Interpreter Fund.
  • Computerized Note takers may be paid an extra 30 minutes (15 minutes for set-up, and 15 minutes at the end of class for printing and editing). This additional time will be included in the overall agreement for provision of service.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • Minimum keyboarding speed of 70 wpm as per CCDI guidelines (a timed keyboard test will be required).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and using a laptop computer.
  • Ability to learn and summarize new subject matter quickly.
  • Ability to analyze technical information quickly, recognize the main points and summarize them in note form.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and problem solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with learning resources, course/subject material and the environment at the post-secondary level is an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.

The following qualifications would be an asset:
