Teck’s two regional business units, North America and Latin America, are responsible for Teck’s assets through all phases of safe, sustainable development, operation and closure. The business units are supported by enterprise-wide functions that set strategic direction, establish standards and provide governance, as well as supporting the business through shared services, centres of excellence and business partnering.
Reporting to the VP, Exploration, the Director, Exploration – Americas is a senior leadership role within Teck Exploration and is responsible for instilling a drive for discovery and value creation. The incumbent leads the effective and agile execution and management of all aspects of Teck’s greenfields and brownfields exploration activities in North America and Latin America. The region covers all jurisdictions within the Americas, but with a current operational focus of Canada, USA, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 15 years of Geoscience and leadership experience, or equivalent experience, with a degree or equivalent experience in Geoscience
  • A relevant, advanced degree such as an MBA, MSc, or PhD or equivalent experience will be considered an asset
  • Leadership experience in major exploration projects (greenfield and brownfield) with the ability to lead and have oversight of multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience and success in managing project generation
  • Experience managing new country entry is preferable
  • Demonstrates vision, strategic and innovative thinking
  • Shows business insight and competence
  • Experience in performance management, planning, and control
  • Encourages entrepreneurship, looks at creative and innovative ways to make valuable contributions, exploring fresh approaches to work and improving efficiencies
  • Ability to work effectively at a variety of scales and ability to guide exploration activities and evaluations at continent, district, or deposit scales
  • Proficient in written and oral English; proficiency in written and oral Spanish will be considered an asset
Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Foster a strong drive for discovery across the Region, combining deep technical competence with commercial expertise
  • Ensure the business of exploration within the Americas including all administrative, governance, legal, and technical requirements and initiatives, is effectively managed
  • Lead all aspects of opportunity identification, pursuit, and capture within the region
  • Evaluate project and exploration risk with jurisdictional teams. Provide mentorship on approach, timelines, and risk mitigation procedures throughout project phases
  • Collaborate with the Operational and Growth Projects management to develop and lead brownfields exploration programs around Teck’s assets in the region
  • Participate in and provide mentorship for commercial evaluations and collaborate with the exploration management team to identify new business opportunities
  • Ensure the Region aligns with Teck policy and reporting requirements by maintaining administrative systems consistent with governance needs
  • Collaborate with local technical and administrative teams to build and track budgets, prioritize resources for each project, and ensure compliance with land tenure and legal reporting requirements
  • Develop a wide network of industry contacts to gather information, recruit, and position Teck as a preferred partner for new opportunities
  • Lead and develop a staff of geoscience, support, and administrative personnel by providing coaching, training, mentoring, employee development, and career planning opportunities
  • Participate in identification and recruitment of new talent to meet the needs of the Region’s work
