Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) to join a PhD project focusing on the interplay between operator theory and complex analysis, and applications to mathematical physics. In this position, you will be working in the Department of Physics and Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, on the Joensuu campus.
As our new Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) you are expected to perform high-quality research and disseminate results through publications and presentations at conferences both in Finland and overseas. The main task of a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) is to conduct research for their dissertation and to complete postgraduate studies.
The Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) will join the Complex Analysis Research Group (website), which currently consists of three professors, one emeritus professor, four university lecturers, and several postdoctoral and doctoral researchers. The Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) may also benefit from the activities of the Theoretical Quantum Photonics Research Group (website). In addition, there will be opportunities to visit other research groups in the supervisor’s research network at New York University, UC Santa Cruz, University of Oxford, University of Reading, and University of Helsinki, which include several senior and early-career researchers with compatible research interests.
The position will be filled for a 3-year term from 1 June 2025 onwards (or starting date as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to the Doctoral Researcher’s (PhD student’s) own doctoral dissertation work and studies. A probationary period is applied to all new members of staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Doctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff depending on the stage of the applicant’s doctoral research and postgraduate studies. The personal performance salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment the total salary will be approximately EUR 2,585–2,720 /month.
