OVERVIEW

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Field/Laboratory Technician to join our team in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Geotechnical Field/Laboratory Technician, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license with acceptable driving record;
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and complete fieldwork in all weather conditions;
  • Willingness to work on a combination of field and office work in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
  • Willingness to be a team player with a strong ability to work independently and be able to carry out assignments with minimal supervision;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Highly organized, and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments; and,
  • Comfortable with variability in day-to-day tasks.

    Assets

  • Technician/technologist diploma from a recognized college;

  • Experience with laboratory soil testing procedures such as Proctor Tests and grain size analyses;
  • An understanding of ASTM and CSA Standards; and,
  • CCIL and CSA Certification for soils, concrete, and asphalt would be an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field inspections and monitoring during construction projects to ensure compliance with geotechnical specifications and standards;
  • Conduct in situ testing of various materials on construction sites, compaction testing, and testing of concrete;
  • Complete field investigations including soil logging of both drilling and test pitting operations;
  • Carrying out laboratory tests within our soils, and concrete laboratory;
  • Ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained in accordance with specifications;
  • Maintaining an organized environment including soil inventory and equipment;
  • Collaborate with engineers and other team members to provide technical support and assistance as needed;
  • Maintain accurate records of field and laboratory testing activities; and,
  • Uphold strong workplace health and safety practices.
