ABOUT US

The SIA is the organisation responsible for the regulation of private security. It is an independent, arm’s length body (ALB) of the Home Office, reporting to the Home Secretary, under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The SIA’s purpose Is protecting the public through effective regulation of the private security industry and working with partners to raise standards across the sector. Its regulatory remit covers the whole of the United Kingdom.
The SIA has two main duties: the compulsory licensing of individuals undertaking designated activities within the private security industry and the management of a voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme, which measures private security suppliers against independently assessed criteria.
SIA licensing covers security operatives who are in guarding, door supervision, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, and public space surveillance using CCTV, vehicle immobilisation (in Northern Ireland) and key holding. Licensing ensures that private security operatives are fit and proper persons who are properly trained and qualified to do their job.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL (ROLE SPECIFIC)

  • Experience of operating at senior leadership levels in a cross-cutting, corporate or coordinating capacity in an organisation. This will have included working directly with/to a CEO, director, senior official, Minister or lead non-executive.
  • A good understanding of governance requirements in public bodies, ideally another regulator or arms length body at Board level and the importance of applying appropriate governance frameworks
  • Evidence of engaging with and influencing government (ideally with both officials and Ministerial offices).
  • Ability to think strategically, as well as a strong analytical skillset when making decisions.
  • A good understanding of strategy development, including the links between strategy, policy and operational delivery.
  • Ability to identify, assess and resolve sensitive issues using sound judgement and complex issues and to advise senior leaders in this capacity whilst delivering at pace in a constantly changing and evolving environment.
  • A good understanding of business planning processes
  • A good understanding of customer service principles and how to apply those to a corporate support function.
  • Experience of budgetary management and ability to drive cultural efficiency and value for money.
  • Ability to influence peers and senior colleagues to engage in the issues for which have functional responsibility (governance, planning, strategy and communications).
