EXPRESSION OF INTEREST - SECONDMENT AS LEAD PRIVATE SECRETARY TO THE MINISTER FOR MĀORI DEVELOPMENT

The Lead Private Secretary works as the primary and senior link between the Minister’s office and Te Puni Kōkiri. Are you our next leader and portfolio expert?

MŌU | ABOUT YOU

The Lead Private Secretary is a portfolio expert and a leader ideally with experience working at a tier 2 or 3 level. They have significant knowledge of the machinery of government, political context and excellent judgement. We are looking for key skills and experience as below.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with Ministers, internal/external stakeholders and senior public service officials
  • Strong management and mentoring skills to provide guidance and direction to other private secretaries the Minister’s office or Te Puni Kōkiri.
  • High level of oral and written communications. Including accuracy in writing, and being able to represent Te Puni Kōkiri confidently and competently
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Public Sector, political environment, machinery of government and can demonstrate an understanding of regulatory processes
  • Strong management and mentoring skills. Passionate about developing knowledge and uplifting capability within the team
  • Pragmatism, resilience and ability to handle pressure, manage multiple, high-priority tasks
  • Comfortable working in a te ao Māori environment and one where tikanga is observed. Speaking te reo Māori (Is desirable but not required)

Responsibilities:

  • Providing support to the Minister and managing the relationship between the Minister’s office and Te Puni Kōkiri
  • Leading a small team of Private Secretaries, including providing support to continually upskill and develop this dynamic team
  • Administration and coordination to support the flow of advice between the Minister and Te Puni Kōkiri, support that ensures timely decision making.
  • Coaching and mentoring of kaimahi in the Minister’s office
