Description
The Vanguard 2.2.1 contract has an opening for a Linux systems Engineer to support the Department of State (DOS) Bureau of Diplomatic Technology (DT). This program provides transparent security services in support of the Department’s goals of deploying and operating a mature ICAM program. This position falls under the “Identity Services Support Service-Line” of the contract.
The Linux engineer will be responsible for installing and monitoring Unix/Linux open-source operating systems and caters to the client’s needs in this environment. The individual also resolves user issues, addresses change management requests, and identifies potential issues by implementing protective measures. The preferred candidate possesses proven experience designing, implementing, and monitoring Linux infrastructure, maintaining Linux systems, and collaborating with other IT professionals in developing automation strategies and deployment processes.
This role is hybrid and will require a minimum of 3 days/week onsite.

Typical Duties:

  • Support the Operating System configuration and associated file systems, log files, processes, problem determination, problem resolution, software, administration tools, utilities, security, and hardware.
  • Install, configure, and maintain servers in a Linux environment.
  • Expert level experience in Linux administration, server virtualization, application/Web server administration Apache/Tomcat/WebLogic, DNS and BIND, oracle directory services, and switches, and network/storage connectivity configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Monitor the health of the Linux servers through both automated and manual processes.
  • Design, develop, and implement infrastructure monitoring and reporting tools through scripts such as BASH and PowerShell.
  • Perform server hardware maintenance and upgrades.
  • Create test automation frameworks in collaboration with team members or other IT departments.
  • Develop tools to help increase functionality and efficiency of available infrastructure.
  • Maintain software repositories and apply software updates.
  • Maintain documentation for procedures, configurations, and programs.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years or Master’s degree and three (3) years of related IT, information security, and/or systems engineering experience, or additional four (4) years in lieu of bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong scripting skills in Python, Ruby, Perl, or a related language.
  • Knowledge of automation technologies.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Experience with Linux servers in virtualized environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux scripting languages.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and management of services such as Bind, Apache, etc.
  • Management, deployment, and troubleshooting of Java and Tomcat applications.
  • Solid understanding of configuration management tools, such as Puppet and Chef.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the following network protection devices: Firewalls, intrusion detection, and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), log analysis, malware analysis, network traffic flow, and packet analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of databases such as MS SQL, Oracle, or DB2.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Background in systems engineering, requirements analysis and synthesis.
  • Operational security & incident response experience with tools such as IDS, Antivirus, Vulnerability Scanners, SIEM.
  • Relevant security certifications .
  • Familiarity with ICAM related technologies (CyberArk, SailPoint, Okta, PKI, Directories, Security hardware, etc..) and enterprise security practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills.
