Job Title: Locum Sonographer
Reporting To: Radiology Services Manager
Contract Type: Temporary Part-Time contract
Job Summary:
In view of the continued growth of Bon Secours, Dublin (BSD) and the recent merger with Bon Secours Mercy Health, BSD is now recruiting a Locum Sonographer to enhance the Ultrasound service in BSD and play a crucial part in delivering access to care and patient experience that are consistent with the Bon Secours Mission, Vision and Values. BSD is a busy multidisciplinary department incorporating MRI, CT, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Interventional Radiology, Ultrasound, DEXA and General Radiography. This is an opportunity for you to join a well-motivated and enthusiastic Ultrasound team providing a high quality of patient care.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (not listed in order of priority):

  • Undertake all Ultrasound Imaging Examinations as required in the Diagnostic Imaging Department. Maintain an effective and efficient high quality ultrasound service for the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
  • Carry out high standard, best practise, clinical imaging when required and be professionally responsible for all aspects of own work, maintaining highest standards of patient care.
  • Competent to work alone and unaided in the delivery of the Ultrasound service and ensure all Ultrasound scans are of diagnostic quality
  • Perform ultrasounds of the abdomen, head and neck, small parts, thyroid, renal, general, pelvic, TV and urinary tract systems etc.
  • Understand ultrasound physics, cross sectional anatomy, physiology and pathology.
  • Provide a preliminary report on all Ultrasound scans for Consultant Radiologists.
  • Ensure timely communication with the Consultant (on call if applicable) on all problematic ultrasounds.
  • Deliver the highest standards of patient care through providing compassionate care and creating a professional environment.
  • Communicate with the patient effectively and empathetically.
  • Provide reports and fast response delivery of results to GPs, Outpatient clinics, Wards and the Medical Assessment Unit when required.
  • Plan, prioritise and organise workload efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management, use of time, workload prioritisation including professional demands of the service.
  • Ensure vetting/ ‘justification in advance’ for all Ultrasound referrals is managed as per departmental/HIQA requirements.
  • Demonstrate and explain Ultrasound Imaging technologies and procedures to visitors and students when requested.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in accordance with the various shift patterns and the service needs of the Department.
  • Maintain all documentation in accordance with hospital policy including data protection and confidentiality e.g. patient information, log books, quality assurance records, staff training record.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects, to resolve patient focused problems, to ensure the delivery of a quality service to the patients.
  • Maintain clear and receptive lines of communication, between clinical and non-clinical colleagues to ensure a professional and high quality imaging service.
  • Liaise with other departments, GPs, Consultants, Secretaries and colleagues to ensure effective patient management.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with Hospital and Departmental policy.
  • Comply with Health and Safety regulations ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment. Maintain a safe environment for staff and patients.
  • Present a professional appearance and conform to the correct clinical dress code and hygiene policy of the department.
  • Take responsibility for the general cleanliness, tidiness and safety of the Department, with specific responsibility for their own work area by complying with the local guidelines for Infection Control and Health and Safety.
  • Ensure adherence to all codes and guidelines relating to professional practise including the management of a departmental Quality Assurance programme.
  • Assist in evaluation, logging and reporting of imaging & equipment faults and that regular monitoring is undertaken in audit.
  • Promote and support the quality process within the Hospital and to implement quality standards ensuring a quality service is delivered at all times.
  • Be familiar with hospital accreditation standards and ensure that these standards are adhered to. Help implement and maintain JCI AOP Radiology Standards.
  • Comply with policies in regard to Human Resources, Health & Safety, Accident and Incident Reporting, Complaints Procedure, Fire Policy and Evacuation.
  • Help implement and maintain Hospital JCI Accreditation Standards including departmental compliance with International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG’s).
  • Participate in clinical audit.
  • Participate in Departmental Quality Improvement Initiatives.
  • Maintain Departmental KPI’s.
  • Help implement and maintain relevant HIQA guidelines.
  • Radiation Protection
  • Ensure the Radiation Protection Rules are applied at all times and to be familiar with all legislation and guidelines contained within the Local Rules for Ionising Radiation.
  • Recognise and comply with Statutory Instrument No. 256 of 2018, Statutory Instrument No. 30 of 2019, European Communities (Medical Ionising Radiation Protection) Regulations; Guidelines on the Protection of the Unborn Child during Diagnostic Medical Procedures, RPII, May 2010; Radiological Protection (Amendment) Act 2002, Local Rules.
  • Help to ensure all Radiology, Nursing, and Consulting staff comply with regulations and guidelines
  • Operate as a patient advocate in Radiation Protection issues.

  • Hold excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of US examinations, enabling modification of protocols with close consultation with specialist Radiologists.
  • Exercise professional accountability at all times and to be aware of their own developments needs/limitations and actively seek to address these where necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of departmental policies, protocols and guidelines.
  • The post holder is responsible for his/her personal development: To keep up to date with the latest developments in Imaging – reading current literature, attending lectures, seminars and refresher courses. To maintain personal CPD portfolio. To make recommendations to ensure that the hospital is at the leading edge of best practice in service provision.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of clinical and technical developments, and promote awareness of them.
  • Keep up to date with current techniques and developments in imaging procedures with particular emphasis on all matters appertaining to US.
  • Familiarise themselves in the operation and use of new pieces of imaging equipment and provide guidance to staff in correct use of same.
  • Participate in orientation programmes of new staff and clinical tutoring of new and existing staff.
  • Assist in the practical induction and supervision of new staff, locums, ultrasound trainees and student radiographers when allocated to work within the department.
  • Assist with assessing new employees for skills/competencies and provide best practise training and supervision to members of staff, ensuring correct clinical techniques and correct use of imaging equipment and accessories.
  • To perform the duties of a Student Liaison Radiographer when required.
  • Complete in-house mandatory training
