JOB DESCRIPTION:
At Regions, the Principal Data Visualization Developer is a visionary and hands-on practitioner that supports the Data Visualization team in deepening technical bench strength across Data Visualization and applies it to Business Intelligence (Bi), Machine Learning, and GenAI. This position will drive the development of scalable, efficient, and reliable data-visualization capabilities that elevate the entire team’s productivity and impact. This includes liaising with the Data Science team in advancing interactive data visualization technologies and techniques to design, develop, and evaluate interactive visual analytics approaches and solutions in support of defensible and explainable descriptive, predictive, prescriptive, and exploratory analysis of data from diverse sources to achieve targeted outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities
Identifies, develops, and implements synergies between the data science and data visualization groups
Drives effective business solutions at the intersection of visual analytics and ML/AI innovation
Provides technical expertise and leadership in the identification, evaluation, and adoption of technologies, tools, systems, platforms, and data structures in support of Regions Data and Analytics solutions, services, and capabilities
Evaluates complex business problems and reviews many possible solutions that leverage data science as well as information design and visualization before providing a solution
Provides technical leadership in exploratory and diagnostic visual analysis, explainable AI, big data analysis, and computational anomaly detection and their applications to business problems
Engages with executive-level stakeholders to understand business strategies and needs related to advanced analytics, and translates requirements into captivating designs and effective, sustainable applications towards using quantitative and analytical techniques to accelerate profitable growth and customer engagement - unlocking value across all functional areas of business
Effectively communicates findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership by translating complex data into clear, concise, and engaging narratives that facilitate understanding and inform decision-making.
Works with large, structured and unstructured datasets and uses Big Data tools (e.g. Hadoop, Spark, H2O, CDSW, Domino Labs, etc.) to build data analytics solutions
Designs, develops, implements, and maintains complex interactive visualization applications using modern tools and techniques to support data science and analysis and to communicate complex ideas to business leaders and executives, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with relevant standards
Works with the data scientists to determine the best approach to communicating an analysis or model, then brings it all the way from design through development to production
Works with the data engineers to ensure the sustainable data pipelines you need are available to, and consumed by, your visualization tools in a robust, maintainable way
Understands tools like D3.js, PowerBI, Tableau, QlikSense, AWS QuickSight, Angular, VUE, React, Semiotic, and R Shiny and guides the team on selecting the best tool for the task
Promotes data literacy within the organization by educating team members and business users alike in the effective use and development of visual analytics tools and techniques and support the advancement of visual analytics literacy throughout Regions
Creates documentation and delivers training to business users on the use of developed tools to drive user adoption
Acts as a subject matter expert to influence Regions’ data visualization strategy and enterprise tool selections
Maintains and advances professional and technical skills and knowledge, including visualization approaches to explainable AI and interpretable ML
Provides leadership to third-party contractors
Keeps abreast of the latest trends in data visualization techniques, technologies, and best practices to continuously improve processes and outcomes. Builds relationships with the data and information visualization community for knowledge transfer, talent acquisition, and collaboration purposes
Conducts routine audits of team activities, ensuring effectiveness, and making changes to processes and procedures when necessary
Offers advice and guidance to team, assisting in the development of necessary skills and the promotion of continuous improvement initiatives
This position is exempt from timekeeping requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
This position is incentive eligible.

Requirements
Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree and six (6) years of experience in computer science, information technology, design, or related quantitative field
Or Master’s degree and eight (8) years of experience in computer science, information technology, design, or related quantitative field
Or Bachelor’s degree and ten (10) years of experience in computer science, information technology, design, or related quantitative field
Experience designing, developing, and implementing solutions in business intelligence, visual information design, and/or interactive data visualization research and development fields and utilizing design-thinking methodology
Experience utilizing Machine Learning, Deep Learning, AI, Visualization/BI tools (e.g. Tableau, Looker, QlikSense, AWS QuickSight, Power BI, D3), Big Data technology (e.g. Hadoop, Hive, Impala, Spark, Kafka), and applicable web technologies (e.g. D3, React/Angular, TypeScript, HTML, SCSS)
Experience analyzing large, complex, and multi-dimensional datasets using a variety of tools (e.g. Python, R, SAS, SPSS)
Experience with non-quantitative visualization approaches to unstructured or relational data (e.g. geospatial visualization and network/graph visualization)
Data visualization design expertise and experience creating interactive web-based data visualizations using applicable tools (such as D3, Observable, Vega, etc.)
Experience with statistical and predictive modeling concepts, machine learning approaches, clustering and classification techniques, recommendation and optimization algorithms, as well as relational databases and Hadoop-based data mining frameworks
Deep Experience with SQL
Programming experience in Python, Ruby, R, Matlab, Scala, or Java
Preferences
Demonstrated knowledge of User Experience design
Experience in Agile Software Development
Experience in libraries such as TensorFlow, Pytorch, or Keras
Experience with big data structures for and data visualization applications to anomaly detection
Experience with new visualization research areas such as explainable AI, interpretable machine learning, uncertainty visualization and visualization bias
Supervisory/management experience in related fields

Pay ranges are job specific and are provided as a point-of-market reference for compensation decisions. Other factors which directly impact pay for individual associates include: experience, skills, knowledge, contribution, job location and, most importantly, performance in the job role. As these factors vary by individuals, pay will also vary among individual associates within the same job.
