Description:
Under the direction of the manager or delegate, the R.N. will communicate, consult and collaborate with multidisciplinary members of the Arrhythmia Service and device industry to plan, organize, facilitate and provide care and education of inpatients and outpatients with cardiac rhythm devices (including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and loop recorders). The R.N. will be responsible for identifying normal and abnormal device function, troubleshooting related concerns, testing/programming devices safely within the guidelines of the delegated medical act and participating in frequent and ongoing self-directed learning and other various educational events.
Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the KHSC strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Eligible for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Two years Cardiac Critical Care nursing within the last three years preferred and successful completion of critical care or coronary care course preferred.
- Advanced cardiac rhythm analysis and basic 12 lead ECG interpretation skills.
- Current Delegated Control Acts including DCA 13 Defibrillation, DCA 10 Temporary Pacemaker Initiation Epicardial preferred.
- Current Delegated Controlled Act DCA 08 Pacemaker Adjustment: Single/Dual Chamber preferred.
- Experience with temporary and permanent pacemakers, internal cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization devices.
- Working knowledge of computer technology required
- Ability to readily adapt to changes in new technology
- Ability to cope with frequent interruptions (multitasking), and to meet deadlines (time management)

Responsibilities:
Plans, organizes and facilitates care of patients with cardiac rhythm devices. Communicates, consults and collaborates with multidisciplinary members of the Arrhythmia Service to provide care of inpatients and outpatients with cardiac rhythm devices (including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and loop recorders). Communicates, consults and collaborates with members of cardiac rhythm device industry concerning patient care, current and new technologies, related field research and educational events. Assesses and evaluates learning needs and knowledge gaps of patients and families and provides teaching and appropriate resource materials as necessary. Maintains appropriate records of assessments and observations, testing, and other aspects of cardiac rhythm device performance, including maintenance of an electronic database. Recognizes and identifies normal and abnormal pacemaker/implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) function and actively participates in the testing and programming of these devices and troubleshooting related concerns. Recognizes and accurately interprets complex cardiac rhythms and electrical recordings from pacemakers and ICDs and adjusts device settings as necessary based on interpretation (within the guidelines of the DMA). Participates in necessary educational activities to obtain certification for the DMA of cardiac rhythm device testing and programming and establishes competency in a timely fashion. Maintains competency to perform controlled acts of cardiac rhythm device management on an ongoing basis. Performs all aspects of cardiac rhythm device management safely within the guidelines of the DMA. Maintains knowledge of specific disease processes related to cardiac rhythm devices including arrhythmias, conduction disease and heart failure.
