Description:

The Satellite Geodesy research group of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB) offers the position of a Research Assistant.
The focus of the activities will be in the field of extending the capability of the Bernese GNSS Software package for VLBI Data analysis.
Tasks
Based on the initial developments related to observation handling and the combined processing of satellites with quasars the full capability of an analysis center of the IVS (International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astronomy) shall be established using the Bernese GNSS Software package. This development shall be carried out in a close cooperation with BKG (Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy, Frankfurt am Main, Germany). The activity is established within the framework of the institutional collaboration: “Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE)”. A refinement of the observation modelling is still needed. At the same time, the robust data processing procedure shall be developed allowing a highly automated VLBI data analysis. The development is supported by IAPG at TUM (Institute of Astronomical and Physical Geodesy; Technical University of Munich) where an initial prototype implementation was established.
The development shall allow in future research in the field of a combined analysis of VLBI and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) measurements – in particular preparing the GENESIS mission. It is of course intended that the successful candidate shall start with scientific experiments in that field with the available functionality.
Education
The candidate is expected to have successfully completed the master thesis (diploma / “Lizentiat”) preferably in astronomy, geodesy, physics, or a related topic. Experience in VLBI and/or GNSS data processing or in using the Bernese GNSS Software package, and in computer science (coding in modern Fortran, C++, or perl) are not a requirement, but an advantage. The candidate should be able to speak and write English fluently.
The candidate should start working in Bern as soon as possible.
The position is scheduled for three years. It can be extended depending on the progress in the project.
The salary follows the guidelines of the University of Bern and depends on the qualification of the successful candidate.
Application
Applications (including CV, university diploma copies, possible references) should be received as soon as possible but no later than August 09, 2024 at the following address:
