Job Summary
The Research Associate performs independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Prepare proposals for funding agencies, operation of research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research. Mentors students in analyzing and preparing data results. This position will be located in Beltsville, Maryland.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs routine and recurring diagnostic techniques and other potential molecular techniques. Conducts independent research aligned with the TAMUS member’s mission. Keeps detailed records of procedures and data in laboratory notebook and/or electronically.
Performs and coordinates maintenance and testing of temperate, tropical, and/or subtropical plants and understands the role of insects in transiting plant pathogens.
Keeps up-to-date on scientific research via reading of literature, etc. Attends scientific meetings and seminars for research enhancement and personal development.
Write reproducible analyses, interpret results, publish findings in peer-reviewed publications
Assists senior staff members in conducting major experiments and consults in developing new and/or updated standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be adopted.
Coordinates and communicates laboratory activities with other members of the facility to work harmoniously with others.
Maintains laboratory instrumentation and follows applicable safety standards according to the policies from the facility.

Minimum Requirements
Education -Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
Experience - Two years of related professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities - Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment. Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Requirements
Education -Master’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience - At least 3-5 years of related experience.
Knowledge of - Knowledge of appropriate laboratory and technical equipment. Knowledge of statistical analyses and statistical analyses software. Knowledge of research in practical and/or basic sciences and scientific publications.
Ability to - Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently once given a project. Able to collaborate with other team members.
