KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Including (but not limited to):

• Day-to-day management of the LRCG data collection service and associated datasets and databases
• Transcription of data from paper case report forms and laboratory reports to our in-house database as required for a specific clinical trial or study. Patient records may include medical notes (often handwritten), complex laboratory test results, or data acquired from other sources
• Liaising with external data managers, external laboratory staff, clinical trial personnel and senior clinical staff, to review data and to proactively and independently retrieve and check required data
• Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in establishing and updating all relevant legal documentation (e.g. material transfer agreements) required by the LRCG for the collection of data and samples
• Liaising with computer programmers and application developers to ensure smooth and efficient management of the LRCG data
• Assist the Project Leader in all aspects of maintaining records of patients on trials and the regulatory issues that govern the management of clinical trials and associated projects
• Present regular updates on progress at weekly group meetings
• To act as a point of contact for regional, national and international data queries
• To routinely audit data quality on manual and electronic systems within the group to ensure that high standards are met and comply with University and Trust and external governing bodies’ requirements
• Help with the preparation for, and facilitation of, audits and/or inspections
• To take responsibility for all data security and integrity in line with University and Trust policies
• Ensure that University and Trust policies in relation to Data Protection/Caldicott Guidelines are adhered to, including checking that all data capture systems used comply with this
• Organise meetings for collaborators. This will include arranging meeting rooms and ensuring relevant documents are available, and acting as the point of contact for their visit to the site
• Provide administrative support when needed as directed by their line manager
• Take responsibility for identifying own learning needs, including identifying appropriate courses to ensure up to date knowledge in the regulations governing clinical research and research data
• To assist with other research administration functions within the department to provide cover for staff absence due to holidays and sickness

We are seeking an enthusiastic Data Manager to assist with the collection of data from patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia treated on national and international clinical trials.
You will work as a member of the Leukaemia Research Cytogenomics Group (LRCG) in the Newcastle Translational & Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University under the guidance of Professor Anthony Moorman and Dr Amir Enshaei. The Data Manager will work as part of a data management team which takes responsibility for the day-to-day management of the LRCG data collection service. This involves (1) managing and updating multiple clinical trial datasets comprising tens of thousands of patients; (2) collecting and entering complex genetic data for ongoing clinical trials and other studies; (3) ensuring that all the relevant governance documentation is in place. The Data Manager will also assist other members of the group and external collaborators in collating data for their research projects.
The post is part of the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Experimental Medicine Award entitled “BIOINFORM: Biologically informed treatment decisions in acute leukaemia” award to Professor Moorman. The overall aim of the programme is to explore the genomic landscape of acute leukaemia and its association with clinical outcome. All the genomic datasets held by the LRCG are richly annotated with patient demographic, clinical, treatment and outcome; and correlating genetics with clinical features is a major part of our programme of research. You will work closely with internal and external collaborators who are experts in the biology and treatment of childhood and adult leukaemia to leverage our unique datasets to identify biomarkers and help improve the outcome of patients with acute leukaemia.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic translational research group with a track record of improving patient diagnosis and management. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their data management expertise, learn new skills and progress to the next stage of their career. You will have a BSc/MSc in a relevant discipline or relevant experience handling medical or biological data.
This appointment is offered part-time (0.4 FTE) on a fixed term basis from 1st March 2025 until 30th April 2028.
