Have you recently completed a degree course in a numerical or scientific subject?
Or are you looking for an Industrial Placement for 6 or 12 months before you return to finish your degree?
Then an Industrial Placement within BBC R&D could be ideal for you!
This is an exceptional opportunity for candidates with a passion for technology to join our award-winning teams within Research & Development, which is part of BBC Design & Engineering. We have a worldwide reputation for contributing and leading the engineering research and development of many of the key broadcast and media technologies that have been introduced over the last 50 years.
This industrial placement will help degree students or post-graduates (or others with equivalent experience) to gain industrial experience for a period of 6 or 12 months. We offer you on-the-job training, in which you will be given a project to complete, aiming to match your existing skills to the available projects.
Our work covers the full breadth of broadcast, media and web technologies, so you could be working on hardware or software development in areas such as audio and video signal processing, computer vision, video coding, IP and broadcast distribution, and the development of new kinds of user experience including interactive and immersive content. You could also be involved in user research studies.
You will not only be working with some of the world’s most highly-regarded technical experts in the fields of broadcast and media, but also with BBC programme makers, giving the role an exciting blend of technology and creativity. Recent projects included working with BBC Click to create their 1000th programme in an interactive form, developing an AR app to accompany the Civilisations series, working with Springwatch to automate the detection of interesting animal activity, and delivering binaural versions of Proms concerts.
We have two labs – one in west London and one at MediaCity in Salford (near Manchester). Each lab covers a broad range of projects, and is multi-disciplinary, with engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, physicists, user experience scientists, designers and web developers collaborating to design, create and evaluate new ways of serving our audience.
We value diversity in our staff, as a creative opportunity to embrace, respond to and be relevant to the totality of the UK’s audiences, so we encourage applications from all genders and backgrounds.
The experience you will gain will be very useful when applying for subsequent roles in broadcast and media technology, including our Graduate R&D Engineer scheme.
