Description:

We¿re looking for an enthusiastic research technician with experience working with livestock, who is keen to combine both field and lab work. You should hold 3 GCSES at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including English Language. You will divide your time between lab work with Dr Hannah Rose Vineer within the Veterinary Parasitology research group, and farm work with Alastair Tollett, assistant farm manager at the University of Liverpool¿s Ness Heath Farm. You will also work with other postdoctoral researchers, technicians and students within the research group and Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences.
The Sustainable Control of Parasites in Ewes (SCOPE) project, which you will support, involves monitoring gastrointestinal nematode infections and key performance indicators in a sub-group of 60 ewes and up to 120 lambs, over two years. The primary roles of this position are 1) to care for sheep involved in the study, and 2) collect and process faecal and pasture samples. In the lab, you will conduct faecal egg counts and pasture larvae counts to monitor levels of parasitism in the flock, and prepare the samples to be submitting for sequencing. On the farm, you will assist with the daily care of the flock (e.g. assisting with lambing, weighing).
The results of this project will inform best practice recommendations for parasite management in sheep, so is an ideal position if you¿re looking to make an impact.
This post is available for up to 27 months with a preferred start date as near as possible to 1 November 2024 and is a full time (35 hours) position based at the Leahurst campus. In addition to the core work described above, you will have the opportunity to attend conferences and coauthor scientific publications, as well as assist with other relevant projects within the Veterinary Parasitology research group, to extend your skillset.
The University of Liverpool is committed to enhancing workforce diversity. We actively seek to attract, develop, and retain colleagues with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We welcome applications from all genders/gender identities, Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic backgrounds, individuals living with a disability, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community
