Summer Terms - Forest Service - ENV002518
Employment Type: Expression of Interest for SGEU Term less than 9 months
Location(s): SK-North Central-Prince Albert
Ministry: 026 Environment
Salary Range: $22.295-$27.939 Hourly
Grade: SGEU.04.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- You will be responsible for the accurate collection of field data. This can involve completing regeneration assessments, establishing forest inventory plots, remeasuring permanent sample plots, and conducting early silviculture assessments.
- You may also be involved in mapping grazing areas and infrastructure, completing vegetation health assessments and helping with field inspections.
- Summer field positions include time away from your home office in Prince Albert for up to a week at a time. Accommodations and a meal allowance are provided by the Forest Service when working away from Prince Albert.
- You are required to have a valid driver’s license. ATV training is considered an asset.
- You should be capable of working in adverse field and weather conditions (think mud, rain and mosquitos!) including walking long distances over sometimes difficult terrain.
- As representatives of the Government of Saskatchewan summer term employees are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner in the office and while working in the field.
- We have a strong commitment to the health and safety of our summer term employees. You are expected to comply with safety regulations, report unsafe or hazardous conditions and complete your work safely.
- We provide an extensive safety and orientation onboarding program at the beginning of May that covers training for ATV, driving, helicopter travel, wildlife behaviours, working alone and program-specific field work.
SKILLS YOU SHOULD HAVE:
- You should be familiar with use of field navigation tools (compass, GPS, paper and digital map products).
- You will have a basic forest ecology, basic statistical principles, forest harvesting operations, silviculture operations and know how to identify boreal forest trees, shrubs and herbs.
- You will be familiar with basic GIS skills needed to produce field maps and basic office software like Word and Excel.
- You will have the ability to work well in a team environment, communicate effectively and collect field data neatly and completely are required skills.
- Having a valid First Aid training is considered an asset.
