Description

WHO WE ARE

The European University Institute (EUI) at a glance:

  • an international organisation set up in 1972;
  • a research university focusing exclusively on postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral studies, and

advanced research;

  • located in the hills overlooking the city of Florence, Italy.

The Institute also hosts the Historical Archives of the European Union.
The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) is an inter-disciplinary research centre at the
heart of the European University Institute (EUI). It was established in 1992 to complement the four EUI
disciplinary departments (Economics, History and Civilization, Law, Political and Social Sciences) with the aim
to be involved in both basic and policy research, collaborate with other centres of excellence in Europe,
provide opportunities for young scholars and promote dialogue with the world of practice. The Centre’s goal is
to maintain an environment and support structure that fosters intellectual curiosity and excellent research. The
research agenda of the Centre is currently guided by three major themes: Integration, Governance and
Democracy; Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and 21st Century World Politics and Europe.

About the project
Project Directors Professor Erik Jones and Professor Mafalda Dâmaso
Project details StreamSCAPES examines how the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) can
support the sustainable climate transition (SCT) with a particular emphasis on
Video-On-Demand (VOD) platforms. Among other things, it provides an
interdisciplinary mapping and assessment of ways to green the operations of VOD
platforms (e.g. by identifying existing policies, skills needs, best practices), pilots
the transformative impact of VOD platforms to engage in Blue Skies generation of
ideas (e.g. by exploring how audiovisual professionals can act as catalysts for the
SCT), and co-tests the potential of VOD platforms to contribute to the SCT in line
with the European Industrial Strategy, the European Green Deal and the 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development. The approach taken acknowledges VOD
platforms as potential facilitators of renewed, green-focused, industrial alliances in
the CCI that could help to address the weak position of European players in the
global platform landscape.
ANIMA MUNDI understands the European Animation Industry Ecosystem (EAIE)
as a value-laden sector with untapped geopolitical potential. The project identifies
and addresses cross-sectoral strengths as well as pervasive gaps in terms of
intellectual property, discoverability, and international partnerships in the EAIE
that enable or hinder its international promotion. Among other activities, ANIMA
MUNDI provides an interdisciplinary mapping and assessment of the visibility of
European animation internationally, investigates innovative hubs of creativity in
the EAIE, pilots international promotional practices, co-tests activities to develop
new strategic alliances and strengthen cooperation among stakeholders (such as
industrial and diplomatic actors), and delivers promotion, distribution, and
institutional collaboration toolkits. In doing so, ANIMA MUNDI supports the EAIE
and, at the same time, its role in the EU’s international cultural relations.
