Job Description
The New York Times is looking for a video editor who will work with video journalists and reporters across the newsroom -
news
,
reporter video
,
visual investigations
, and
field video
- to bring compelling original video journalism to life on our site and on social platforms. We are looking for a candidate with a strong video editing background and a portfolio that demonstrates the ability to deliver that work in an engaging way on tight deadlines. The role will work across a range of our video coverage, including vertical video storytelling which features The Times’ world-class journalists on-camera. We’re looking for an editor who has deep experience in breaking and ongoing news coverage, with a track record of creating digitally compelling short-form video journalism. You will work with video journalists and producers in the pre/post production process, including writing, structure and creative execution.
This is a hybrid position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Video editing of news, enterprise and investigative linear news videos
  • Making and publishing short news text-on-screen packages and clips in breaking news scenarios, as required
  • Demonstrating excellent news judgment
  • Working within a newsroom environment and under deadline pressure
  • Incorporate animation, motion graphics and graphic templates for new and existing formats.
  • Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling on and off-platform.
  • Occasionally will guide junior staff on edits and is comfortable working autonomously

Basic Qualifications:

  • Significant and proven experience in video editing
  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere and CS
  • Proven ability to craft stories, own video research for a project and edit a video with oversight from managers and senior staff
  • Thorough knowledge of current events, with experience covering news.
  • Conceive and create fresh original videos related to the news.
  • Must have an impressive portfolio of video editing primarily for digital or broadcast.
  • Must understand all of the elements and steps needed to create exceptional content.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bring a digital first mindset to editing on-platform and for social media
  • Familiarity with the latest video editing techniques and technologies.
  • The ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.
  • A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals.
  • Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Collaborative team player with a positive attitude.
