Description:

We are looking for a driven, passionate, highly capable, skilled and fun person to join our Base Camp Greenland team on our East Greenland Arctic Adventure. This is a contract position that will be a critical role in ensuring the success of one of Natural Habitat Adventure’s (Nat Hab) most important programs.

TIME & SEASONALITY REQUIREMENTS

This is a field-based, seasonal contract position from mid-June until mid-September. Our Greenland Base Camp is on a remote island where independent travel is not possible, and it could be the case that you are moving between a small settlement and camp without any additional travel during the season.
While your hours will vary from day to day, candidates should expect to work long hours every day in order to accomplish our goal of ultimate customer service. It is understood that at times it takes very early mornings and late evenings to accomplish our goals.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Robust understanding of off-grid water and electrical systems
  • Experience operating and conducting regular maintenance of generators
  • General understanding of catalytic heater function, hazards and maintenance
  • High-degree of competency conducting outboard motor maintenance and repair
  • Familiarity with zodiac maintenance, standard operation, and best practices strongly preferred
  • Capable problem solver comfortable troubleshooting a wide variety of infrastructure related issues including but not limited to: mechanical, electrical, structural and plumbing
  • Three or more years of managerial experience working in remote camp environments, with demonstrated success in managing people and teams
  • Customer service experience strongly preferred
  • Proven leadership abilities, including a strong track record of dependability, teamwork, sound decision making and interpersonal skills
  • Experience living and working in remote areas for extended periods of time
  • Arctic strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated competency driving boats and strong understanding of boat management in inter-tidal zones
  • Experience driving zodiacs in proximity to icebergs strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated competency with firearms and comfortable managing and responding to human wildlife encounters
  • Significant experience handling firearms in polar bear country strongly preferred.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification or equivalent
  • Able to lift 100 lbs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead operations staff at Nat Hab’s Base Camp Greenland including Logistics and Hospitality Coordinator, Chef, Housekeeper, and local staff
  • Build, develop and maintain camp systems and infrastructure pre-, during and post-season
  • Make knowledgeable and sound risk management decisions in an Arctic environment in coordination with Expedition Leaders (when available)
  • Manage polar bear safety in camp and respond to emergency situations in coordination with Expedition Leaders (when available)
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment at camp for all guests and staff
  • Maintain and repair camp infrastructure including zodiacs, outboard motors, generators, propane and electrical appliances, kayaks, and tension fabric buildings
  • Maintain and repair camp systems including water supply, wastewater discharge, generation and transmission of electrical power, waste disposal and manage fuel sources
  • Lead camp breakdown and inventory management at the end of the season, including lists of what is needed for future seasons
  • Work with Nat Hab office and on-site staff to effectively manage communication and safety procedures including polar bear safety, first aid, and medical evacuation
  • Coordinate team meetings as needed and resolve staffing issues if necessary
  • Provide payments to local services providers, schedule local staff and keep detailed expense tracking documents
  • Support camp operations by purchasing supplies in nearby community and maintaining local relations
  • Be available to assist and support clients with questions and problems in collaboration with the Expedition Leaders
  • Provide regular communication with office staff throughout the season
  • Conduct end of season reviews for camp staff with the office
