OTHER FEATURES OF THE GATEWAYS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:

APPOINTMENT - If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after completing educational requirements. Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.
AGREEMENT: All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with their manager that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship etc.
CONVERSION: Although not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship Program to a permanent appointment without further competition in accordance with established policy. Conversion must occur within 120 days after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of diploma, certificate, or degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career-related work experience, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern’s participant agreement. Additionally, the intern must meet qualification requirements and any other position requirements associated with the position to which converted. The intern must be converted to an occupation related to his/her academic training and career-related work experience as outlined in their participant agreement

QUALIFICATIONS

FV-D: To qualify for the FV-D, Completion of 4 or more academic years of post-high school that lead to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry and applicants must show evidence that their planned academic program will meet those requirements (i.e. transcript reflecting enrollment in applicable programs). Students who graduate without meeting those requirements may not be converted to the target position and could be separated from federal service. Educational requirements for conversion to the target position are: Degree in Professional Engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least 1 curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2)include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than 1st year physics & chemistry) in 5 of these 7 areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials; (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials; and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
The selecting official may decide to interview all, some or none of the candidates referred for consideration.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES

The Student Trainee will be part of the NextGen team and work with other professionals from various disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, etc. The incumbent will possess knowledge of basic engineering concepts and communication skills sufficient to engage in research and development projects that may be related to aircraft fire safety, human factors, airport technology, aircraft software and systems, or aircraft structures and propulsion. The research activity, which you will take part in, is required to support the development of standards and policies that contribute to improving aviation safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System. You will also be required to communicate information to various audiences through technical reports, notes, and briefings.
Performs a mixture of routine and somewhat complex tasks under the general direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or other more experienced employee. Assists manager and other employees in day-to-day operations. Applies basic knowledge and limited experience in performing tasks. Regularly coordinates with a manager and/or other more experienced employee to plan time, prioritize assignments, and use assigned resources to accomplish tasks.
Applies detailed knowledge and limited experience in performing tasks and has a general understanding of the work activities and objectives of the organizational unit.
