About this area The School of Aviation offers undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes to both local and international students as well as being a
professional training programme. The Bachelor of Aviation – Air Transport
Pilot operates under an Equivalence Approval from CAA NZ whereby
courses within the degree programme will inform and examine students in
relevant parts of the CAA Act, along with additional academic knowledge,
to ensure that graduates meet the required Pilot licencing standards
and the graduate profile of the degree.

Accountabilities
Teaching/Mentoring • Act as a Mentor for allocated BAv ATP students. This includes the
instruction, supervision, and management of the student to facilitate

the student’s learning.

  • Ensure allocated students receive all practicum events in

accordance with the syllabus for which the student is
enrolled, and these events are delivered in accordance

with the Scenario Based Training syllabus.

  • Be able to advise the CFI, DCFI or Paper Coordinators about the status

and progress of all allocated students within the papers for

which students are enrolled when required.

  • During the year demonstrate competency and

standardisation of delivery of the syllabus by successfully

completing scheduled operational checks.

  • Carry out the tasks of the Duty Instructor (if qualified).
  • Deliver practicum events, in accordance with the syllabus to

Administration ensure a successful, timely completion as required by the

academic papers or the programme to which they belong.

  • All events must be delivered in accordance with the

operational (Management and Policy Manual, Operation
and Maintenance Control Manual and Training and
Assessments Manual) and regulatory (NZ CAA) and
academic (NZ CUAP) requirements and standards under
which the School of Aviation operates, including the
Massey University: NZ CAA Equivalence Agreement (BAv

ATP programme).

  • Be able to advise the CFI, DCFI or Paper Coordinators about the status

and progress of all allocated students within the papers for

which students are enrolled when required.

  • Maintain accurate and up to date records of allocated

students in FlightPro, ensure that the student’s personal
logbooks match the FlightPro logbooks and ensure the
Student Drop File is up to date.

  • Note any academic credit that has been awarded in

recognition of previous aeronautical experience, in
accordance with the Training and Assessments Manual

2.1.3.

  • Identify any additional resources, the Centre may need to ensure that

assigned students complete their practicum events on
time, and as required by the paper to which the events

belong.

  • At the start of each Semester, meet with the CFI and agree

Individual progress rates to the end of the semester and each month

leading up to it for each allocated student.

  • During the meeting at the start of the first semester in the

year, discuss the aircraft and simulator time completed by
the instructor in the previous year and targets for the

current year.

  • During the meeting at the start of the second semester

discuss how the aircraft and simulator time completed by the
instructor in the year to date compares to the targets
discussed in the meeting at the start of the first semester.
These agreed progress rates for the allocated students and
aircraft and simulator time target for the instructor will be

the benchmark for performance measurement over the year.

  • Ensure that appropriate Aviation Safety Standards are followed and be

responsible for reporting any accidents, near misses and
hazard identification immediately to the Chief Flight

Instructor through the safety occurrence reporting system.

  • Ensure all University property including aircraft simulators buildings and

equipment is respectively used in a manner which will not
cause damage. Take reasonable action to ensure
University Property (in particular aircraft) will not be
damaged due to the forecast winds while parked on the
apron. Ensure University buildings are locked up and

secure at the end of the working day.

  • Actively identifying any Aviation Security Breach or Risk and informing

the CFI and DCFI without delay.

  • Any secondary task must be approved by the CFI.
  • Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to personal and professional

development, especially through active participation in
the area of syllabus development, Student Workbooks,
and multimedia instruction resources.
University • Ensure the observance of university policy and codes of practice in all

teaching and administrative practices.

  • Comply with the university’s obligation under the university’s charter

regarding equal employment and the Treaty of Waitangi.
Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications:

  • CAA NZ Commercial Pilot’s License

  • Current New Zealand “A” or “B” Category Flight Instructor’s rating

with multi-engine instrument ratings.
Experience: • Ab initio flight training experience in New Zealand and/or Australia.
