Internal/External Job Posting Competition #3919630 1.0 FTE Temporary Sign Language Acquisition Support Worker (Non-Union) Start Date : As Soon as Possible until June 25, 2025 with possible extension Location : St. Edward Catholic School, Nipigon Hours of Work : 35 hours/week Salary : $52,300 to $63,500 Position Description: The Sign Language Acquisition Support Worker will facilitate access to communication for a Deaf student, who will learn to use American Sign Language, in the classroom and educational school setting. The SIgn Language Acquisition Support Worker will be a member of the school team where support is needed for a student who is Deaf. Roles and Responsibilities: The Sign Language Acquisition Support Worker will work with a student who is Deaf at St.
Edward Catholic School and will be responsible for: Facilitating the student’s language acquisition in the educational setting by providing instruction and modelling of ASL in a variety of settings which may include; the classroom, field trips or activities, to assist with the student’s communication with peers and adults Interact with the student in ASL, to focus their attention on classroom learning, guiding appropriate responses and modelling of social expectationsIncrease the student’s vocabulary, syntax and critical thinking as it relates to language Work as a team member to provide educational support and programming in collaboration with the classroom teacher and other agencies as appropriate Prepare for the day by maintaining good communication with the classroom teacher, becoming familiar with content areas and developing strategies to support student successParticipate in meetings for programming and communication support as required Act as a liaison between the student and other staff members regarding programming challenges and needs as they arise Provide ongoing data to the classroom educators for assessment purposes of student growth and learning Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: The successful applicant must possess: Demonstrated Sign Language Proficiency Post secondary education in one of the following is preferred; Education Assistant Diploma, Early Childhood Education, Social Service Worker, Child and Developmental Service Worker Certificate in American Sign Language Experience working with culturally Deaf children or youth Preferred Qualities/Skills: Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following: Knowledge of cross-cultural issues for the Deaf Experience working with children Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Knowledge of child and language development Experience working as part of a team Demonstrated ability to develop relationships to work collaboratively and network with other educators and community partners Conditions of Employment Must undergo a successful Vulnerable Sector Screening check Please submit a completed application package including: Cover letter and resume which clearly outlines your qualifications, skills and experiences related to the position.
