Description

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join our Earth System Model (ESM) team, focusing on developing hydrological and biogeochemistry processes within the land surface numerical model employed at the CMCC (i.e. Community Land Model, CLM). These positions aim to advance the representation and understanding of the carbon, nitrogen, energy, and water cycles and their interlinkages at various time and spatial scales.
The researchers will have significant flexibility to work across several projects, aligning their scientific expertise and interest with the broad scope of the division. These positions will play a critical role in advancing the capabilities of the components of the CMCC Earth System Model, particularly by improving its performance, accuracy and scientific robustness.

ABOUT US

CMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change. CMCC’s core objective is to conduct cutting-edge science, to train the next generation of scientists at both national and international levels, and to be a beacon for climate modelling.
CMCC pursues fundamental and applied science with utmost scientific integrity, prioritizing data-driven science and providing data, information, and research results that can support informed public debate and decision-making processes. To achieve climate research objectives at the highest international standards, we invest in training all our talents and strive to create a workplace where everyone can excel.
At CMCC you will find a strong, professional environment. Join an inclusive community that values diversity, where every voice is heard and respected. Help foster a culture of innovation and societal change, where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and succeed.
Over the last decade, CMCC has experienced extraordinary growth. We are now embarking on a new chapter of our journey that will further boost CMCC’s global position in climate change research…Together!

REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in physics, climate science, environmental science, applied mathematics or equivalent subjects, or at least three years of demonstrated experience in numerical modeling and Earth system research;
  • Very good knowledge of written and oral English language.
  • Evidence of ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Advanced computer literacy, programming skills, scientific computation (you will work with complex FORTRAN and PYTHON codes in a UNIX / LINUX environment)
  • Confident at data analysis and data processing using tools (e.g. Python or MATLAB);
  • Experience of working in High Performance Computing environment;Optionally, ability to analyse and use observational data (e.g. satellite and in situ data)

Responsibilities

ROLE

The candidates will contribute to addressing critical challenges in model development, such as improving parameterization, implementing new processes, and coupling multiple Earth system components, these roles will contribute to increasing the overall model complexity and realism.
The successful candidates will be responsible for the effective and timely development, implementation, and assessment of land hydrological and biogeochemical processes. Candidates should have a strong background in land surface, soil, and/or hydrology modeling and a solid understanding of climate variability and land-atmosphere interactions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Postdoctoral researcher in Land Biogeochemistry modelling

The successful candidate will work on developing and implementing biogeochemical processes in the Community Land Model (CLM). Responsibilities include:

  • Improve the nitrogen cycle processes within CLM;
  • Update the carbon emission produced by CLM (e.g. fire module, VOCs, photosynthesis);
  • Conducting land only and coupled global simulations;
  • Investigate impact of Land Carbon Dioxide Removal on climate.
  • Postdoctoral researcher in Land Hydrology modelling

The successful candidate will work on developing and implementing hydrological processes in the Community Land Model (CLM) and in the river routing scheme. Responsibilities include:

  • Improve representation of soil hydrology scheme and processes, such as leaching;
  • Implement freshwater transport of nutrient from land to ocean;
  • Conducting land only and coupled global simulations;
  • Evaluate the variability of the water cycle and its impact on the climate system.
