QUALIFICATIONS AND/ OR EXPERIENCE

Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology.
Demonstrate up to date knowledge of all aspects of general obstetrics and gynaecology practice, with particular emphasis on paediatric adolescent gynaecology, and ability to demonstrate special additional training in paediatric and adolescent gynaecology.
Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered
and
(a) The possession of the MRCPI or MRCOG or a qualification in Obstetrics / Gynaecology equivalent thereto
and
(b) Inclusion on or eligibility to be included on the Register of Specialists maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland

OTHER REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO THE POST

To be available to attend labour ward within 30 minutes when on duty.

SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND/OR KNOWLEDGE

  • Demonstrate expertise in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynaecology.
  • Evidence of dedicated additional training and experience in paediatric and adolescent gynaecology (PAG) is mandatory.
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to manage a busy labour ward effectively.
  • Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills including awareness of resource management and importance of value for money.
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect.
  • Demonstrate an ability to engage in research and clinical trials.
  • Demonstrate an ability to participate fully in audit and clinical governance programmes.
Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF THE POST

The high-level purpose of the post is to optimise the service provision of paediatric and adolescent gynaecological care for all who require it within the Rotunda and CHI.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer. This will focus on both obstetrics and gynaecology, but with a special emphasis on paediatric and adolescent gynaecology (PAG), and will also include ambulatory gynaecology, outpatient, inpatient, elective and emergency gynaecology services. Termination of pregnancy services may be integrated into ambulatory gynaecology service plans.
  • Participate in tri-hospital PAG MDT between Rotunda/Coombe/NMH for complex cases with referral onwards to UCLH London where indicated.
  • Increase the outpatient sessions available in CHI Temple Street to reduce waiting lists, by working collaboratively with the other PAG specialists from the other Dublin maternity hospitals currently appointed to CHI.
  • Dedicated theatre sessions in CHI to reduce surgical waiting list/improve access to theatre for PAG patients in CHI.
  • Participate in the obstetric care (antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal) of women attending the Rotunda hospital within vulnerable and marginalized groups specifically the teenage pregnancy service.
  • Provide cover to current paediatric and adolescent gynaecologist in the Rotunda when away on leave and other absences.
  • Participate in ambulatory gynecology service delivery at Rotunda hospital.
  • To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
  • To work within the framework of the hospital service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer. Service planning for individual clinical services will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate structure or other arrangements as apply.
  • To formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer periodically. The Consultant may initially seek internal review of the determinations of the Clinical Director regarding the Service Plan.
  • To provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultant’s area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request.
  • To ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors in training.
  • To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant’s care.
  • To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate. The Employer will provide training as required.
  • To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures.
  • To participate in and facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform planning and management of service delivery.
  • To co-operate with the expeditious implementation of Disciplinary Procedures.
