REFUGEE LAW OFFICE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

To provide legal representation and advice to refugee claimants, permanent residents, and persons with precarious immigration status. LAO is seeking an articling student with a background and interest in Immigration and Refugee law and someone who demonstrates a passionate commitment to working with vulnerable migrants and who is able to work collegially in a public sector environment.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Eligible to undertake articles in Ontario.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public interest work.
  • Knowledge of immigration and refugee law systems and processes
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including persons living with mental health and addictions challenges
  • Demonstrated excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment.
  • Solid understanding of the mission of Legal Aid Ontario.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and video platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement. Fluency in French and/or in other languages (such as Arabic, Spanish, Tamil, Punjabi, and Dari/Farsi, Spanish etc.) will be considered an asset.
