Advanced Trainee/Fellow in Paediatric Anaesthesia: One-year post, mixed clinical/research
The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia and Pain Management at the Royal Children’s Hospital has an annual turnover of 20,000 general anaesthetics, 2,000 acute pain consultations and 200 chronic pain management consultations. The Department is staffed by 27 full time, 10 sessional specialist paediatric anaesthetists, 12 advanced trainees in paediatric anaesthesia and 9 anaesthesia registrars. There are 35 anaesthesia technologists who assist the anaesthetists.
In 2026 the Department is offering a twelve-month advanced training, mixed clinical/research position.
This position is suitable for an anaesthetist who does not yet hold FANZCA, or equivalent, has significant experience in anaesthesia research and can demonstrate the capacity to develop and lead international research collaborations.
The position will start on 3/08/26.
The Advanced Paediatric Anaesthesia Training Program includes:
- General paediatric anaesthesia
- Paediatric anaesthesia sub-specialties:eg Craniofacial surgery, neurosurgery, urological surgery, major orthopaedic surgery, cardiac surgery, and cardiac, liver and renal transplantation
- Acute pain management (ward rounds and out-of-hours cover)
An active anaesthesia teaching program is provided for all advanced trainees which includes:
- 4-hour tutorial every second week designed for advanced trainees (on a six-month cycle)
- general departmental education meeting for ½ hour per week
Advanced trainees will be expected to participate in the out-of-hours roster.
Candidates should be should be in ANZCA Provisional Fellow Year or equivalent and should have a minimum of four months’ previous experience in paediatric anaesthesia. The successful candidate should have significant research experience and demonstrate the ability to develop and lead international research collaborations.
