ABOUT THE ROLE

Western Health endeavours to tailor its training program in Geriatric Medicine to the needs of its community as well as the needs and interests of individual registrars, including those working part time. Western Health is a major partner in the Western Training Alliance of the Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program (VGMTP), together with Melbourne Health, Barwon Health and Ballarat Health.
The Geriatric Medicine Department is a highly respected department within WH. We are involved in all points of care in a patient’s journey – with a Geriatrician in ED model of care, 6 Acute Aged Care units, 3 orthogeriatric units, 6 subacute wards, and multiple community services, specialist clinics and rapid access clinics. We have strong working relationships with all other departments and are involved in establishing several innovative models of care. We are a large department of 30 Consultant Geriatricians who are passionate about providing best care to our patients and providing an excellent training experience for our Registrars.

Western Health offers trainees’ exposure to a comprehensive range of clinical services, including:

  • The Largest Acute Aged Care Program in Victoria
  • Orthogeriatrics Service
  • Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) units across Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown Hospitals
  • Cardiogeriatrics Service
  • Dementia Management Unit
  • Rehabilitation

  • Specialty Clinics, including Movement Disorders, Falls and Mobility, Falls and Fractures, Wound, Continence, CDAMS and Geriatric Clinic
  • Community-Based Care including Community Geriatrics, GEM@Home, Residential in Reach.

In addition, there is a rotation to Aged Person’s Mental Health at Sunshine Hospital.
There is also an extensive education program. Trainees attend the fortnightly state-wide VGMTP sessions, a local program tailored to the needs of Western Alliance trainees and various other local training activities including those expected in a teaching hospital. Supportive senior medical staff supervise all aspects of training, and the Western Alliance Fellow in Geriatric Medicine is based at Western Health.
Western Health has a clinical school affiliation with the University of Melbourne.
In 2026, there are 15 full-time equivalent Advanced Training positions (first year and continuing) and FIGM position. We welcome applicants who seek part-time training and we have one part-time position available in 2026.
Rotations are 3 x 4 months. We tailor these rotations to the trainee, to offer a broad training experience, but also to ensure outstanding training needs, especially in the final year, are met.
