INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN SPECIALIST

The instructional Designer (ID) creates and manages the course development process; working directly with content and subject matter experts, facilitators, and other stakeholders the ID develops organized, accessible, courses that engage students through self-paced learner-centered inquiry. The ID works with school and district leadership to implement and apply district-wide curriculum and instructional values in courses used at Cabarrus Virtual Academy and online learning across the district. The role involves consulting with staff from diverse disciplines to identify course goals and applicable evidence-based instructional strategies, leading and managing teams of consultants and advisors to design and build online courses. The ID helps recruit and hire online facilitators and develops and conducts training for new facilitators and supports and evaluates online teaching. The ID develops and facilitates course evaluation procedures to ensure academic and instructional quality and leads course redesign efforts.
As staff member at Cabarrus Virtual, the ID will also provide pedagogical training to staff through workshops, webinars, video tutorials, etc. regarding topics related to online instruction, the Canvas LMS, course design, and integration of instructional technology. The ID is responsible for the success of a number of simultaneous projects, data analysis, and communication with stakeholders in an effort to promote collaboration and accountability.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of instructional theory and curriculum design including assessment
  • Thorough understanding of curriculum theory and development, instructional design, and assessment and evaluation of learning.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS), such as Canvas
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Experience with design platforms, such as Canvas, Loom, and Google Suite
  • Familiarity with course management systems. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical colleagues and clients
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages while meeting deadlines and quality standards and assigning/overseeing tasks with project collaborators
  • Advanced skills in planning, organizing, and self-management
  • Ability to facilitate collaboration, support, and approval from a variety of stakeholders
  • Tracks progress on tasks using project management software, staying on top of deadlines,
  • Self-assesses individual contributions for quality assurance and for internal best practices in learning and information design
  • Flexibility and the ability to accommodate change.
  • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to meet deadlines and handle divergent tasks simultaneously.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to tailor communication to an audience to achieve the desired result.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology or similar field
  • Administrative degree, preferred
  • At least two years’ experience with instructional design and online course development, preferably secondary education
  • At least five years of prior teaching experience
  • Experience with fully online teaching
  • Technology proficiency and knowledge of digital learning
  • Experience successfully leading and managing a team of adults to accomplish goals
    Experience designing and leading staff development

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding or certification in Quality Matters (QM) and/or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) in online course design and/or delivery
  • Training in secondary curriculum and instruction
  • Experience providing instructional design across modalities (i.e., face-to-face, hybrid and online courses)
  • Experience designing learning environments for CCS students and underrepresented student

  • Curriculum development and design experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.

  • Develops and designs courses and curriculum- including learning activities, assignments, and assessments.
  • Develop and facilitate training for new online teachers
  • Monitors and supports online facilitators in Cabarrus Virtual courses
  • Develops instructor’s manuals, rubrics, other teaching tools and online learning resources.
  • Collaborates with content and subject matter experts to develop course content.
  • Manages online learning communities to support and coach teachers.
  • Stays abreast developing research in curriculum, technology and online instruction
  • Reviews course work, facilitator feedback, design reviews and survey data to evaluate and revise course materials
  • Collaborates with district curriculum leadership on standards, district curriculum, disciplinary strategies and exemplary instruction
  • Analyzes, updates, and refines existing online content.
  • Trains instructors, students, and employees in how to use learning technologies.
  • Develops learning resources for courses including scripts for video and audio content.
  • Works with technical staff to troubleshoot problems reported by users.
  • Creates and applies qualitative and quantitative data from learning to evaluate courses and learning experience across courses, disciplines and the school
    Oversees and manages recruitment, training, and work of contracted facilitators and advisors
