JOB OVERVIEW

The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for up to two temporary full-time Animal Control Officer’s (from approx. October 20, 2025 to October 16, 2026) to join our team of professionals in the Bylaw Enforcement Division, Bylaw Enforcement Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Bylaw Community Enforcement, in this unionized position you will be responsible for investigating complaints regarding animal bylaw violations, issue tickets, catch and transport animals and provide information and assistance to the public. This work involves extensive public contact and the preparation and delivery of evidence in court to represent the Township.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to animal care, bylaw enforcement, or regulatory investigations, plus some experience related to enforcement, animal control or regulatory work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Considerable knowledge of the bylaws and regulations governing the work performed
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures and equipment used in the catching, handling and safe transport of dangerous, stray, sick and maimed animals
  • Ability to investigate complaints and enforce bylaws and regulations with tact, impartiality, firmness and sound judgement
  • Ability to explain and interpret bylaws, regulations and applicable rules to the public
  • Ability to work independently and support general bylaw enforcement duties and adapt to varied calls for service
Responsibilities
  • Promote compliance with the Animal Control Bylaw through providing information and assistance to the public related to animal care and welfare matters
  • Patrol areas such as roads, parks and public spaces to monitor for animal control bylaw violations
  • Investigate animal-related complaints pertaining to public safety, barking, biting and mistreated animals
  • Prepare investigation files, reports and evidence including taking notes, photos and statements
  • Catch and/or seize dangerous, stray and feral animals/injured wildlife and transport to the animal shelter
  • Issue verbal warnings, written notices and bylaw infraction tickets and recommend charges where appropriate
  • Assist with general bylaw related complaints including parking, nuisance, noise, property standards and unsightly premises
  • Perform related work as required
