The Opportunity The Elevating Devices Safety Officer is accountable for maintaining and enhancing public safety by educating the public and industry to ensure that codes, regulations and standards of safety are understood and observed. Status: Regular, Full-Time, Union Number of Positions: 1 Pay Grade: 16 (Starting at $47.20/hr) Location: Lower Mainland Region (Vancouver or Langley preferred) Reports to: Operations Leader, Transportation   As an Elevating Devices Safety Officer, you will: * Inspect: Provide inspection services, including worksite audits, incident investigations and hazard eliminations, to clients and stakeholders to ensure that safety regulations, codes and standards are correctly implemented. Provides input on variance requests to Senior Safety Officer (SSO) when requested. * Educate: Educate clients and stakeholders on how to meet safety requirements and provide information on new requirements and trends by creating and/or providing presentations, demonstrations or individual coaching. * Train: Assist in the development of new Safety Officers by providing on-the-job training, regular mentoring and ongoing technical support. * Enforce: Implement enforcement policies by providing clear direction and outlining consequences to clients. Provides evidence to proceed with compliance and enforcement actions when necessary to the compliance and enforcement leads. * Research: Support research tasks by documenting inspections, providing audits, and investigating incidents, and maintain expertise by staying up to date on industry changes and upgrading knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis. * Certification: certifies new elevating technology (complete systems or components) by reviewing engineering data, associating the relevant applicable codes and standards and conducting type testing; review design specification for code compliance, identify gaps using risk assessment; evaluates components/systems for equivalent or greater safety and issues variances  where applicable; and reviews installation, maintenance/service and operation procedures (Safety Management Programs).   Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have: * Knowledge of the maintenance and safe operation of elevating devices. Knowledge of electrical, building, elevating and performance-based codes and ability to keep up to date with code changes. * CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators * CSA B355 Lifts for Persons with Physical Disabilities * CSA Z185 Safety Code for Personnel Hoists * 1 Canadian Electrical Code * QEI Certification (preferred). * Broad knowledge across numerous technologies including mechanical, electrical, construction practices and fire safety * Knowledge of safe work practices associated with inspecting operating elevating devices, which includes hazard recognition, testing & verifying procedures to safely access/egress an elevator car top or pit * Broad knowledge of the operation of elevating devices from different manufacturers’ models and vintages * Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills * Ability to manage high volumes of emails, manage scheduling of inspections from various clients, adapt to applicable company technologies.  * Strong ability to write concise reports, interpret drawings, schematics, and code specifications. * A Valid BC Drivers’ License and a willingness to travel (A driver’s abstract will be requested) * Good physical ability to carry a toolbox (up to 30 lbs.), climb ladders and stairways, walk on rough uneven ground, enter tight enclosed or confined spaces, and drive for long distances (A medical assessment will be requested) * Requires completion of a recognized apprenticeship from an Institute of Technology as an elevator mechanic, millwright, heavy duty mechanic or electrician, completion of post-secondary course in subjects related, supplemented by a minimum of five years of related experience in the elevating field. Preference for a two-year diploma from a recognized Institute of Technology for candidates who have completed an apprenticeship. * Will be required to successfully complete various Elevator Inspectors’ examinations within the first six months of employment in order to be successful in the competition. Successful completion is defined as a 70% or better score.  * Will be required to successfully complete the Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) Certification within 18 months of employment.
