  • Minimum of Associate’s Degree;
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; and
  • Secondary or post-secondary coaching and/or athletic director experience

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment may be indoors in a gymnasium or outdoors with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to in excess of 90 degrees F. Responsibilities
  • Assists coaches with scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events including contractual agreements;
  • Directs and coordinates all athletic activities;
  • Oversees game administration including but not limited to: scheduling contractual agreements with officials, securing all needed personnel for basic athletic event operations, insuring tha all facilities are properly prepared for the contest(s), scheduling transportation, and financial arrangements for contests;
  • Assures all athletic inventories are properly maintained;
  • Assists with supervision of athletic events;
  • Assists principal with preparation and management of athletic budget to be presented to the Superintendent for review;
  • Supervises the cleaning, storage, and care of all athletic equipment/facilities;
  • Knows and upholds all county, West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC) and league rules;
  • Maintains proper records as required by West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission for school participation;
  • Attends meetings of local, regional, and state leagues and organizations, as directed by the principal;
  • Assists, in an advisory capacity, in the selection of athletic coaches/trainers;
  • Coordinates and ensures that proper practice schedules and safety procedures are developed and maintained;
  • Attends selected away contests, as directed by the principal, for supervising purposes;
  • Organizes, administers, and supervises sectional, regional, and playoff contests as assigned by the WVSSAC;
  • Maintains an active program that promotes sportsmanship and welcomes the competing teams and guests;
  • Supervises coaches and, if appropriately certified, observes and evaluates coaches;
  • Arranges the practice schedules of the coaches on the fields and in the gymnasiums;
  • Assists coaches with arrangements for physical examinations for candidates for athletic squads;
  • Verifies the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season;
  • Coordinates the insurance program covering school athletes and assumes responsibility for processing of reports and claims;
  • Coordinates SSAC/State Board, physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport and verifies each athlete’s eligibility;
  • Strives to promote good public relations with the general public, news media, opponents’ schools, civic organizations, and booster clubs;
  • Assures a team athletic trainer or physician for attendance at football games and arranges for ambulance service at football games;
  • Issues all passes and complimentary tickets, at the direction of the principal;
  • Regulates the use of the press box and the public address system, at the direction of the principal;
  • Sets up the flag raising ceremony and the playing of the National Anthem, at the direction of the principal;
  • Reconfirms the athletic contest, one (1) week prior to the game date, with the visiting school and game officials;
  • Makes arrangements for emergency medical care at athletic events;
  • Maintains responsibility for regulations concerning visiting scouts;
  • Arranges for the ordering and the presentation of letters and other athletic awards, in conjunction with the coaches;
  • Handles all matters pertaining to radio broadcasts, at the direction of the principal;
  • Arranges for reconditioning of athletic equipment, in conjunction with the coaches;
  • Adheres to Employee Code of Conduct; and
  • Performs duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
