WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment may be indoors in a gymnasium or outdoors with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to in excess of 90 degrees F. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud (60 -90 dB).

Responsibilities
  • Exhibits professional and interpersonal relations
  • Cooperates with building principal, athletic director, and county staff
  • Develops rapport with coaching staff within the school
  • Develops positive relationships with participants, student body, faculty, parents, spectators, community, game officials, news media, and opponents
  • Prepares public information releases regarding his/her sport
  • Treats players, parents, staff, and students with fairness and respect while on and off the arena of play
  • Motivates staff and players
  • Appropriate appearance, behavior, and language
  • Models positive behavior at all times.
  • Follows and enforces all school, county, league, conference, and WVSSAC policies related to his/her sport;
  • Attends league, conference and WVSSAC meetings;
  • Implements fundamental sports skills and sports management systems
  • Develops and implements high caliber and quality instruction
  • Teaches fundamental skills
  • Handles athletic injuries
  • Plans and designs quality organization of practice sessions
  • Supervises and disciplines teams appropriately
  • Manages budget and follows purchasing procedures
  • Designs pre-season planning and conditioning
  • Supervises managers and other support personnel

  • Devotes time and energy to coaching duties
  • Cares for equipment and
  • Follows end of season procedures, including collecting uniforms and equipment, and completing inventory.
  • Provides leadership and support in planning, developing and implementing an instructional program in the sport;
  • Assumes responsibility for all matters relating to the organization and administration of the team under his/her direction;
  • Assigns duties to all coaching staff, managers, and other support persons
  • Coordinates with administration in planning special events such as assemblies, parents’ night, homecoming activities, banquets, etc.
  • Maintains an accurate and current squad roster and submits copies to the athletic director and principal;
  • Cooperates with the athletic director in setting up physical examination schedules and verifies that no candidate is allowed to practice or issued equipment (if applicable) until his/her examination card has been completed and his/her insurance coverage is in effect;
  • Assists with preparation of fields/gym for practices and contests;
  • Promptly completes evaluations of officials;
  • Completes any courses/trainings required by WVSSAC
  • Assigns at least one (1) coach to be with the squad at all times;

Note: This includes locker room supervision until all squad members have left the building. A spot check should then be made to see that all windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used.

  • Prepares a detailed equipment and supply request and submits it to the athletic director or principal;
  • Arranges for the presentation of team awards through the athletic director or principal;
  • Recommends teams that may be scheduled and officials to be employed to the athletic director or principal;
  • Enforces rules and regulations concerning conditioning of players and their health and safety;
  • Reports injuries to the athletic trainer, athletic director and principal;

Note: Coaches should exercise great care in dealing with all injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should assure that the inured athlete is receiving competent medical care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should secure the signed approval of the doctor and the parent before the athlete is allowed to participate again in athletic activities
