Role

  • Assist the master to ensure safe navigation.
  • Preparing chart for passage plan
  • Maintenance of navigation chart and publications and safety equipment.
  • Motivating vessel crew for involvement in HSE activities.
  • Supervising preparation of meals
  • Supervising cargo operations and assisting in cargo securing.
  • Supervising safe operations of anchor handling.
  • Coordinating marine safety during diving operations (if applicable).
  • Supervising overall housekeeping, cleanliness & hygiene of galley & accommodation on board the vessel.
  • Familiarizing himself with details of emergency stations & procedures.
  • Using appropriate safety equipment & protective clothing.

Authority:

  • To make all decisions in support of the legal orders/instructions of the captain/chief mate.
  • Give legal orders/instructions to the crew.
  • To stop any unsafe work that may harm the health of personnel, cause injury to personnel or damage the environment.

Responsibilities:

  • In the absence of the chief mate, he will be acting as safety officer onboard.
  • Using appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing
  • Securing deck cargo, and ordering, receiving, stowing, and issuing deck stores.
  • Maintaining order and crew morale, including shipboard discipline.
  • Monitoring food supplies and supervising preparation of meals.
  • Ensures good housekeeping of accommodation spaces, galley and deck.
  • Providing necessary supervision to ensure deck activities are carried out safely.
  • Maintaining stocks of foods items in store and deck items, ensuring ordering of correct quantity of food items and monitoring receipt of the same.
