POSITION SUMMARY OBJECTIVETo care for students and staff on a daily basis when the District Nurse is not in the building. This includes assisting students who need to take medication as prescribed by a doctor, students/staff that become ill and injuries that happen during the school day. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS To function at the direction of the District Nurse in the performance of activities delegated by that Health Care Professional in accordance with approved district policies. To provide health appraisal, health counseling, and health emergency services as necessary and in accordance with the Standards of Practice set forth by the Vermont Board of Nursing, if a licensed professional.
To minimize student absences due to illness. To maintain safe and effective nursing care rendered directly or indirectly. To contribute to the assessment of the health status of individuals.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDReports to and evaluated by the District Nurse and by the Principal. Receives direction from the School District Nurse.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITESNo formal supervisory duties. May train, assist and occasionally direct co-worker, but generally works along with those persons. PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS: Health Appraisal Implements a system for maintaining confidential student health records. Conducts and analyzes results of vision/hearing screening tests, confirm the need for follow-up based upon standardized protocols, and notify the Supervising Nurse of any students that fail screening.
Participates in the development and modification of the strategy of care. Consults with parents regarding recommendations for physician referrals. Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs. Informs direct teachers and staff of individual student health concerns in accordance with FERPA rules and regulations.
Assists in the development of health care plans and gives input to meetings, such as 504 and IEP, as requested by teachers, Supervising Nurse, and Building Principal. Notifies Supervising Nurse of major illness, outbreak of illness, or confirmed reportable disease.B. Medicines Dispenses medicines to students in accordance with state rules and regulations as per district policy. Provides for proper and safe storage of medicines in accordance with policy.
Maintains documentation of medication administration given as per policy. Notifies Supervising Nurse of any discrepancies in medication pill counts or documentation errors. Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Implements procedures which encourage parents to maintain current immunization schedules for their children. Implements policies on communicable disease control per accepted protocol, to include but not limited to, Head Lice, Chicken Pox, Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Strep infections and rashes.
D. Emergency Services Treatment of ill and injured students. Contacts individuals in connection with medical emergencies, such as parents, rescue, etc. and notify District Nurse once resolved.
Renders first aid and care to students, staff, and other personnel within school building and grounds as needed, as per established protocol. Miscellaneous Duties In conjunction with District Nurse, develop budgetary recommendations and order health supplies. Maintains student health records. Reviews district health policies, in conjunction with District Nurse, and recommend changes as needed.Provides annual student health record reports as requested.
Initiates health records on all new student, if needed. Assists in district-wide programs of safety, education, and accident prevention. Reports safety hazards to the District Nurse and other designated school personnel and, if applicable, recommends action to curtail safety hazards. Maintains a clean and orderly health office, particularly areas in which treatments are performed.
Performs health related service activities that can be legally delegated by the District Nurse, under the direction of the Supervising Nurse. Acquires needed skills and knowledge with little reluctance.QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and professional expectations satisfactorily, in addition to the following: Education/Work Experience: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS SHOULD INCLUDE: VT License as LPN, OR alternatives to this qualification as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable;current CPR certification;current First Aid certification;mature and stable individual experienced in working with children and adolescents;two years experience in a health-related setting;good written and oral communication skills;able to deal effectively with students, parents, and community..Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees. Computer Skills and Experience: Proficient use of Google Suite: Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Sheets. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel. Experience working in and updating database systems.
Web and Social Media communications experience preferred. Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies.
