JOB OVERVIEW

Aboriginal Infant Development Resource Worker will provide holistic support in home and the community to caregivers and families with Indigenous children aged 0-4 years old. Utilizing a culturally informed, strength-based approach, the AIDP Resource Worker will work closely with families to assess, plan, and implement support strategies that focus on their child’s developmental needs. AIDP Resource Worker will focus on relationship-building, early intervention, and the blending of both traditional and contemporary approaches to parenting and child development.
Working as part of a team, the AIDP Resource Worker will promote and support traditional cultural teachings and practices for families and the community. They will work to connect families to other LFVAS programming and community supports as needed.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

  • Undergraduate degree in a field related to child development (i.e. child and youth care, early education, social work, etc.) or Certificate/ Diploma in Infant Development and Supported Child Development, or ECE certificate with Post Basic Infant/Toddler and Special Needs Educator Certificate An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered
  • Minimum two years’ experience in the A/IDP, A/SCD field or ECD field working with Indigenous children and families.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of early intervention, child development, family-centered practice, and community-based services required
  • Working knowledge and experience with developmental screenings and assessment tools. (i.e. ASQ, ASQ-SE, DAYC-2)
  • Emergency Child Care First Aid with CPR/AED Level B (Infant/Child)
  • Food Safe Certificate

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task; self-motivated personality with ability to take initiative and work as part of the LFVAS team.
  • Understanding of strength-based, family-centred, trauma-informed practice.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions and issues impacting on urban Indigenous families.
  • Must have Indigenous cultural agility and demonstrate appropriate behavioural competencies.
  • Knowledge and experience of group processes and facilitation.
  • Dynamic interpersonal skills, supportive counselling and advocacy skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, SharePoint, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving moderate physical activity in working with children, including walking, standing, bending, kneeling and lifting of children.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous communities, organizations, and service providers in and around the community of Langley an asset

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must successfully complete Criminal Record Review for work with children and vulnerable adults
Must have reliable vehicle and a valid BC driver’s licence and provide a driver’s abstract

Responsibilities
  • Promote and support traditional cultural teachings and practices for our families, organization, and community
  • Work with families and caregivers of Indigenous children aged 0-4 years by providing developmental information, resources, and supportive referrals.
  • Act as a resource for parents/caregivers by providing strategies and solutions that blend traditional and modern parenting practices.
  • Provide home and community-based visits to assess their child’s development, assist families in learning activities that will support development, and monitor the child’s progress in meeting milestones.
  • Assists families to increase and strengthen their knowledge of child development and work with them on topics such as parenting, bonding and attachment, and nutrition while respecting their traditional values and culture.
  • Administer developmental screening and assessments (ASQ, ASQ-SE, DAYC-2) and write reports and recommendations as necessary
  • Facilitate groups such as Infant Massage and Circle of Security
  • Strengthen and support Indigenous families and caregivers in their role as advocates for their children and themselves.
  • Help reduce barriers to accessing medical and/or specialist appointments by providing transportation as needed.
  • Attend parent/child drop-in playgroups regularly and provide support to families with developmental knowledge and practice using a strength-based approach
  • Develop, maintain relationships, and make referrals to health and social service professionals who work with Aboriginal families including but not limited to: ASCD Consultants, Physicians, Elders, AIDP consultants, Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists, Aboriginal Health Workers, Delegated Indigenous Agencies and other various community partners
  • Provide waitlist services as required, which may include one or more of the following interim strategies: information packages relating to development guidance, access to the resource library of books and toys, invitations to attend parent meetings and/or workshops on child development, and referral(s) to other agencies that may provide other types of support
  • Participate in other LFVAS events and planning such as National Indigenous Peoples Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Family Gatherings, Workshops, Summer Programs and Winter activities.
