Xavier University’s Office of Advising and Learning Support is seeking an Academic Advisor to work with first year and at-risk undergraduate students. The role collaborates with faculty, assistant deans, and campus partners to help undergraduate students meet their academic and career goals and provides support for the Office of Advising and Learning Support. The Academic Advisor assists students in understanding major and core requirements, planning satisfactory academic progress, course selection and registration. The position will provide proactive outreach to students at risk academically to ensure they get back on track for graduation. In addition, this role collaborates with colleagues on communication, evaluation and assessment efforts for the Office of Advising and Learning Support.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in related fields, Master’s degree preferred in Higher Education, College Counseling, or related field
  • 1-3 years of experience working with undergraduate students
    o Understanding of college student development theory and advising practices
    o Collaborative and able to build relationships with students and variety of constituents internal and externally
    o Working knowledge of college curriculum and institutional policies and practices which support students’ academic journeys
    o Experience utilizing student information software to document and coordinate work with students (E.g. Navigate360, Banner, Workday)
    o Preferred: Experience working with students on academic probation or students needing additional academic support

Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized, developmental, appreciative academic advising to 200-250 current and prospective undergraduate students with specific emphasis on first-year students. Help students gain proficiency in understanding course requirements and sequencing to graduate on time, explain how courses relate to their personal and professional goals; and educate students on academic policies, procedures and deadlines.
  • Assist with Road-to-Xavier online registration process for incoming students.
  • Provide academic support to at-risk and probationary students using proactive outreach and interventions. Assist students as they return to school after suspensions to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of common outreach campaigns, and assessment efforts for the Office of Advising and Learning Support
