ISS Facilitator (10-month position)
The Academic Support Assistant assists students who have been placed in the in-school suspension program by providing instructional assistance and encouragement for students to complete their assignments. The Academic Support Assistant communicates and works closely with administrators, teachers, school staff, and parents regarding the
student’s discipline, attendance, and progress. Reports to a principal and assistant principal.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Associate Degree or higher, preferred.
General knowledge of student handbook rules.
Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when students are participating in an inclusive activity.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
General knowledge of daily routines of the classroom.
Possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom.
Ability to operate common office machines.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to motivate students.
Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.
General knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.
General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be able to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. May be required to lift a student. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions or directions to students.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and complete simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets using prescribed format.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply.
Manual Dexterity: Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk, see, and hear.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made.
Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages.
Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines.
Skill necessary to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.
Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.
Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor.
Ability to impart information to the child’s level of comprehension.
Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.
Ability to solve independently most minor problems.
Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.
Ability to record and store data accurately.
Ability to use correct grammar in written and oral formats.
Ability to speak in a clear and pleasant manner.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.

Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; checks daily attendance; makes copies; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains and operates audiovisual equipment; orders supplies; maintains class files, etc.
Works closely with school administrator to maintain accurate records of student’s referrals and academic progress.
Participates in staff development workshops.
