ACCEPTABLE KNOWLEDGE (RESEARCH) TECHNOLOGIST 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, this level will include:

  • Mentor technicians and/or technologists 1s.
  • Lead and review the activities of other employees.
  • Check work through consultation and agreement verses formal review.
  • Develop specifications for project implementation in area of specialty.
  • Oversee work and non-expert staff and verify that the end product meets expectations and requirements.
  • Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to the work and work area to which assigned.
  • May perform role as safety officer or other work-related responsibility at group or division level.

ACCEPTABLE KNOWLEDGE (RESEARCH) TECHNOLOGIST 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, this level will include:

  • Develops specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or production processes in support of research.
  • Leads a small team of technologists in their experimental/ technical work.
  • Develops ideas and components to the production of research documentation and proposals.
  • Works under minimal consultative direction toward pre-determined long-range goals and objectives.
  • Develops new techniques, concepts, experimental design and/or innovative/effective solutions to complex problems in area of specialty training and across related subject areas.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Regulations: Demonstrated record of safety and security compliance. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding/adherence to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to the work and work area to which assigned.
Skills: Experience in the development of techniques and the fulfillment of research goals. Experience contributing to the development of new principles and concepts, specifications for project implementation, and verifying that the end product meets expectations and requirements. Knowledge of scientific principles, experimental processes, mathematical formulas, computations and data gathering methods. Demonstrated knowledge of standard principles, concepts and techniques in area of technical specialty.
Leadership/Followership: Ability to work under collaborative direction and guidance toward predetermined goals and objectives. Experience supervising some portion of research projects, preparing research documentation, and providing peer-review of the documentation of other members of the team. Experience contributing to or co-authoring scientific publications.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS FOR RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Skills/Experience: Demonstrated depth of knowledge in practice acquired by experience, certification, and/or formal education. Resolves problems of moderately complex scope requiring review of a variety of factors. May co-author publications.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent, i.e., GED)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of TA-55 facility operations and NPI mission.
  • Experience working within LANL policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of experience using Waste and Nuclear Materials Management databases such as Waste Characterization and Tracking System (WCATS), LAMCAS, and LANMAS
  • Familiarity or experience working in support of waste characterization, hazardous waste management (RCRA)
  • Experience working in a Nuclear Facility
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with hazardous material shipping and the hazardous waste processes
  • An active Q clearance with HRP.
