JOB DESCRIPTION

The Access and User Services, Department Head position provides leadership and guidance for a variety of services including circulation, course reserves, consortial resource sharing, technology lending collections, creative technology services, learning commons partnerships located in the library, and the library’s integrated public service points where customers get assistance with general information needs, first level of reference, and technology. This non-tenure track position requires a strong commitment to public services coupled with a vision for using emerging technologies and evidence-based decision practices to develop, implement, and assess services.
The Access and User Services Department consists of ten full-time employees and several student employees. This position will directly supervise three full-time employees, the Customer Experience Manager, Access Services Manager, and the Creative Technology Services Manager.
As a library faculty member, the Access and User Services, Department Head participates on Library and campus-wide committees and in CU Denver faculty governance.

QUALIFICATIONS YOU ALREADY POSSESS (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or equivalent advanced degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited or equivalent accrediting body program
  • Two years of relevant leadership experience in access and public services, reference, circulation (including an integrated library system), interlibrary loan, document delivery, and/or course reserves.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION TO POSSESS (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Experience working in and/or providing leadership for a makerspace.
  • Experience in an academic library environment in a variety of access and public services including: reference, circulation including an integrated library system (such as Innovative), interlibrary loan, document delivery, and course reserves.
  • Assessment experience in the access and public services areas including collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data.

  • Ability to lead staff and workflows/processes in support of strategic goals.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies as applied to access and public services.

Responsibilities

Leadership in Access and User Services and Creative Technology Services

  • Leads and promotes the operations of the library’s integrated service points which provide desk and roving assistance for first level of reference, accessibility services, library technology, general/directional questions, circulation, course reserves, document delivery, and other transactions.
  • Explores and implements ongoing technological and programmatic advances in access and public services and creative technologies.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in the use of evidence-based decision making to determine best practices and a high-quality suite of services.
  • Captures, analyzes, and assesses transactional and performance metrics and data to determine trends and develop strategies to improve the library experience for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Analyzes and manages workflows and processes to improve delivery, speed, effectiveness, and accuracy of resource sharing.
  • Oversees the circulation module of the library’s ILS (Sierra, Innovative Interfaces).
  • Actively promotes an environment of continual improvement by engaging in ongoing learning, information sharing, and professional development as a member of the Auraria Library learning organization.
  • Conceptualizes and oversees the library’s web content regarding access and user services and creative technology services.
  • Participates in the creation and enforcement of policies and procedures for the library’s physical spaces.
  • Opens and closes the library on occasion.

Organizational Leadership and External Partnerships

  • Communicates with campus partners providing academic services in the library, currently including writing and tutoring services, as well as envisioning future partnerships.
  • Coordinates with the Outreach and Engagement Program Lead Librarian to promote library spaces and services to maximize effective use of library resources in collaboration with the Outreach Team.
  • Develops and implements strategies for improving the functionality of course reserves by partnering with teaching faculty, educational technology centers, Teaching and Learning, Department Head, and library liaisons.
  • Works with consortium partners, such as CLIC, Colorado Alliance, and Prospector to ensure effective operations.
  • Communicates with clarity and transparency with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participates in library and departmental strategic planning.
  • Actively promotes an environment of continual improvement by engaging in ongoing learning, information sharing, and professional development as a member of the Auraria Library learning organization.

Other

  • Collaborates with the Head of Access and User Services, Head of Information Technology and Web Services, Head of Collection Development and Strategies and Head of Discovery Systems and Metadata to plan, develop, and implement cross-departmental public services with the aim of excellent over-all user experience.
  • Serves as the team lead for the Service Point Operations Team to plan, develop, and implement cross-departmental public services with the aim of excellent overall user experience.
  • Collaborates with other library units and teams to develop services as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
