QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology or related field
  • Strong computer knowledge
  • Familiarity with assistive technology (ie. Dragon Naturally Speaking, Kurzweil)
  • Familiarity with Lakehead University’s Policies and Procedures
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Human Rights Code
  • Experience working with students with disabilities

Responsibilities
  • Prepares intake information
  • Examines documentation and ensures that it’s appropriate
  • Consults with students to discuss academic accommodations for each course
  • Prepares Confidential Accommodation Form that is sent to professors
  • Consults with professors as necessary
  • Attends feedback sessions with psychologists as required
  • Discusses responsibilities with students
  • Inputs student information in Clockwork database
  • Emails students with the procedure for the Resolution of Disagreements when necessary
  • Refers students who are eligible for the Bursary for Students with Disabilities to the Manager of Student Accessibility Services
  • Provides information to students regarding assistive technology
  • Arranges for students to receive training in assistive technology
  • Attends in service sessions and demonstrations of assistive technology
  • Attends training about the use of assistive technology and how to train students to use assistive technology.
  • Meets with students as required; including regular academic support sessions
  • Provides sessions on time management, organization and study strategies to students with disabilities
  • Refers students to Student Health and Counselling as appropriate
  • Liaise with other university offices (ie. Student Success, ACSS and Scheduling) as needed
  • Liaise with staff from Confederation College to arrange academic accommodations for students attending the nursing program at the College
  • Liaise with staff from outside the university as needed (ie. physicians, mental health workers, etc)
  • Attends meetings between students and professors as requested
  • Assists students with completing arrangements for final exams through the Scheduling office
  • Liaise with Physical Plant to address accessibility issues on campus
  • Assists in online chat sessions with prospective students
  • Prepares information and the office display board to present at university functions (ie. orientation, Gr.12 Day, Gr. 11 Day, etc)
  • Presents information to students and staff about the services of Student Accessibility Services at university functions (ie. re-orientation, Gr. 12 Day, Gr.11 Day, etc)
  • Prepares information packages to provide to secondary school teachers on services available for students with disabilities at Lakehead University
  • Prepares information packages to provide to prospective students about the services available for students with disabilities that are transitioning to post-secondary education
