Description

Reporting to the Director of Student Resilience within the UCLA Extension Office of Disability Services (ODS), the Accessibility Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the effective administration and delivery of services for Extension students registered with ODS for various disabilities.
Major responsibilities include: Collaborating within a team environment to review Verification of Disability forms, medical documentation, and psychological evaluations, ensuring compliance with University, State, and Federal guidelines; Determining appropriate accommodations and support services based on verified documentation; Communicating and interpreting UCLA and Extension policies and procedures related to accessibility and disability services; Providing referrals to relevant on-campus and off-campus resources to support student success; Coordinating with internal and external departments and programs to facilitate comprehensive services for students served by ODS; Assisting in the development and facilitation of workshops and presentations focused on equitable disability management and advocacy for instructors, staff, and students; Preparing written materials to support program initiatives and communications; Supporting other ODS services and functions as needed, under the direction of the Director of Student Resilience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 years Minimum of professional experience in disability services, health, or social work, preferrably in a postsecondary or closely related setting. (Preferred)
  • Genuine commitment to inclusive excellence and helping to develop the next level of transformative leadership within the Center for Student Resilience and the Office of People & Culture. Acts as an employee champion and change agent. (Required)
  • Strict adherence to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. (Required)
  • Ability to honor confidentiality and handle confidential/sensitive matters with discretion and tact. Excellent professional judgment working with a population of students who can sometimes be vulnerable and in need of sensitive support. (Required)
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to ensure direct, effective, respectful, and collaborative interactions. Understands and models cultural competence and skill, communicating with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, including students instructors, senior-level administrators, staff, campus department personnel, external vendors, and the public. (Required)
  • Ability to read policies and procedures written in Standard English text and interpret the information clearly and accurately to students and other internal/external customers in a manner that is easy to understand. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor when communicating with impacted students or facing an emergency situation. (Required)
  • Knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques involved in employee’s specialty, for example, learning disorders, mobility disability, visual impairment, etc. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, facilitate, problem solve, and to work effectively and diplomatically under time pressures, frequent interruptions, and distractions in a fast-paced environment. (Required)
  • Knowledge and ability to provide advising on disability management and compensatory strategies for students with disabilities. (Required)
  • Ability to organize and teach workshops and support groups to assist students with disabilities to develop personal understanding about disability-related issues. (Required)
  • Adhere to established work schedule; arrive on time and prepared for meetings; follow through on promises and commitments. Ability to work flexible shifts. (Required)
  • Demonstrated expertise in using systems required for service to students, including but not limited to Student Information System, live chat, and case management systems; ability to understand basic workflows. Demonstrated experiencing using MS Office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. (Preferred)

EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & PERSONAL AFFILIATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
