Description SUMMARY: With supervision, learns to edit and adapt textbooks and educational support material for braille to ensure educational integrity for students who are blind or low vision. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Essential Functions: Conduct quality control reviews of textbooks submitted by external and internal transcribers to ensure they meet with specifications, BANA Transcription Guidelines, and NBA Textbook Format Guidelines. Consults reference books or secures aid of readers to check references with rules of grammar and composition. Collaborates with braille transcribers in developing/editing picture descriptions as needed. Assists in the development of MSB editing standards (as directed). Compares text, images, and figures using an original print copy against the same data on the accessible records to detect errors. Marks copy to indicate errors in type, arrangement, grammar, punctuation, or spelling, using standard printer marks. Records omissions, errors, or inconsistencies found through proofreading on the error log record. Attends professional development conferences, workshops, etc. in the field of blindness and low vision. Marginal Functions: Performs additional duties as assigned. Requirements CONDITIONS: Equipment Used: Windows-based PCs, Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, braille translation software, keyboard, mouse, modem, printer, scanner, photocopier, braille embossers, tactile image enhancers, tactile graphics kit, Thermoform machine, fax machine, telephone, brailler, slate and stylus, paper cutter, binding machine. Performance Standard: Must ensure accurate, timely production of educational braille materials and tactile graphics 100% of the time. Work Environment: Standard office conditions with overhead fluorescent lighting, 70-80 degree air temperature. Second floor location requires use of stairs when the elevator is not functioning. Work Schedule: 37.5 daytime hours per week, Monday – Friday. Flextime or additional hours are occasionally required. This position follows the standard 12-month school calendar. Qualifications: Proficient knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook) and general knowledge of Google Suite (with willingness to learn, if not familiar). At least 1 year of experience transcribing Braille. May substitute years of experience with certain skill sets. NLS literary certification is required. Enrollment in the course to obtain certification within 1 year of hire date is acceptable. Ability to learn a variety of braille translation software. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. HS Diploma or GED equivalency required. Must be at least 18 years of age.
