The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a detail-oriented and forward-thinking Accountant to deliver professional accounting and financial services that support both our municipal operations and Commodity and Rate Based business units. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or finance from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience, including at least two (2) years in a governmental accounting environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and management-approved experience may be considered.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial and management reports for assigned business units and assist with the interpretation of data to guide decision-making.
  • Develop operating and capital budgets, forecasts, and rate models in collaboration with departments and Corporate Planning and Performance.
  • Coordinate and prepare monthly financial statements, trend analyses, year-end projections, reconciliations, and capital asset records.
  • Ensure proper capitalization, disposal, and amortization of assets, and prepare accurate year-end entries and working papers.
  • Assist with audits by responding to external auditor queries, and complete statistical and regulatory reporting.
  • Review department and corporate grant agreements and assist in preparation of Statement of Funding Expenditures.
  • Mentor and train Senior Accounting Assistants, review financial transactions, and lead or support corporate accounting projects and business case development.
  • Research, develop, recommend, and maintain accounting procedures and internal controls, ensuring compliance and testing their effectiveness.
  • Represent the Finance department professionally on City projects, fostering collaboration and effective communication.
