Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a Master’s degree or completion of a university degree plus two years of graduate work or completion of university degree plus a professional accreditation in Accounting, Auditing, or a related field. Education should be in the Accounting or Business field.
  • Must have 5 to 7 years’ experience in a centralized accounting environment, preferably in a municipality.
  • Must be comfortable with HST legislation and practices.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of accounting principles and be able to apply these to day-to-day operations.
  • Must be comfortable working with a centralized accounting or ERP system; must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel.
  • Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively, professionally and diplomatically with staff, local boards and auditors.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinating the month end procedures/process, including accruals, prepaids, journal entries, and HST filing.
  • Coordinating the year end procedures/process, including accruals, prepaids, journal entries, preparation of working papers and financial statement notes, assistance with the consolidation process and with the preparation of the financial statements and financial information return.
  • Preparation of various reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, including intercompany balancing and analysis on various balances in conjunction with the relevant department (ex. allowance calculations).
  • Being the HST expert for the town, including the determination of taxable revenue items, eligibility of public sector rebates vs. ITCs, filing monthly returns, and providing guidance and assistance to local boards on HST topics.
  • Working with local boards on their financial statements and questions, including the preparation of the year-end financial statements and attendance at relevant board meetings.
  • Training for town staff on the use of the corporate accounting system, maintaining the chart of accounts, providing accounting system assistance as required.
  • Various accounting projects.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
