Description

IN SUMMARY, THE ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT WILL:

  • Process vendor invoices, verify accuracy, manage payment schedules, and ensure timely payments in compliance with company policies.
  • Coordinate ordering, maintain accurate inventory records for office and operational supplies, and ensure cost efficiency.
  • Perform regular reconciliations of key general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and review monthly bank reconciliations to ensure transactions are recorded and discrepancies resolved promptly.
  • Accurately record accounting transactions, including journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Assist in month-end closing activities, including reconciliation, variance analysis, and preparation of supporting schedules.
  • Compile and maintain financial data for internal reporting and external audit requirements.
  • Identify and recommend and implement opportunities to improve financial processes and controls.
  • Work collaboratively with team members across departments to support the credit union’s financial goals.
  • Ensure all financial activities adhere to internal policies, set requirements.

THE “MUST-HAVE” SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS THAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR ARE:

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of credit union or financial services experience.
  • Diploma or post-secondary education in business, finance, accounting, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with accounting or ERP systems is an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with a customer-service focus and the ability to build positive working relationships with internal departments and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-focused mindset.
  • Problem-solving ability to identify discrepancies and take corrective action.
  • Demonstrated reliability, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Adaptability to changing priorities and willingness to learn new skills related to finance and accounting operations.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
