Role: Accounting Supervisor

Location: Flexible: Remote in U.S., hybrid if local to Virgina Beach, VA

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Accounting Supervisor will lead a team of accounting professionals and oversee key financial operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable oversight, and financial oversight of Global Partnerships. This role requires a detail-oriented accounting supervisor with strong leadership skills, a passion for non-profit work, and experience managing global financial operations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • CPA designation not required but preferred.
  • 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Proven supervisory experience with a collaborative leadership style.
  • Experience with international financial operations and multi-currency environments.
  • Familiarity with donor-funded projects and restricted fund accounting.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, data analysis) and Power Query
  • Experience with Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Project management experience and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee complete and accurate monthly account reconciliations.
  • Ensure all subsidiary account balances reconcile with general ledger control balances across countries.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure compliance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards.
  • Provide oversight of payroll processing and related tax filings.
  • Mentor, train, and support accounting team members.
  • Oversee the analysis of restricted gifts and ensure timely release of restrictions.
  • Evaluate and streamline accounting processes; lead implementation of improvement projects.
  • Assist with research and implementation of evolving non-profit accounting standards.
  • Support financial oversight of global partnerships, international foundations, and representative offices.
  • Manage outsourced accounts payable functions.
  • Perform other financial duties as assigned by the Controller.
  • Directly supervise accounting staff in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and resolving problems.
